HILLSBORO — It isn't an overstatement to say the past few matches for the Hillsboro Indians have been tough. Since the fair week, the team just hasn't been the same … that was until Thursday night with the Indians defending their home field for a 5-0 win against the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles.
One big part of the Indians' success Thursday was due to junior forward Brandon Carter and his career-best four goals, for the hat-trick plus one. After scoring his third goal, he even got a makeshift shoe shine from teammate Jarrod Hart, and Carter said after he played his final minute of the match …"it must be the shoes."
"This was Brandon's best night of his career," HHS coach John Weber said. "The team in general played excellent."
It was that kind of night for the Indians as they got back to their winning ways, improving to 6-5-3 overall and 5-4-2 in the South Central Ohio League.
"We are still working on some things, but we did start the first 30 minutes tonight like a few of the games we did that we lost. But we are getting back to the team we were at the start of the season.
"We have been missing a lot of shots, but one thing I liked was in the second half, we played like we did at the start of the year. As long as we get our shots on goal, we'll be fine as a team."
Carter scored both first-half goals for the Tribe, putting the ball in the back of the net with 11:35 left for his first goal and 8:41 for the 2-0 lead.
With HHS putting a lot of offensive pressure on the Golden Eagles, it was Hart who made the score 3-0 with an assist from Michael Theobold, leaving 17:38 on the clock.
Carter earned the hat-trick with 9:45 on the clock, and his fourth goal came with 7:58 remaining in the match.
It wasn't only the offense for the Indians that produced, but the defense with keeper Corey Walker making some big saves in the second half to keep the shutout going, along with help from defensive players Jerry Bailey, Colton Wertsbaugh and Tyler Griego.
HHS will soon know what their postseason opener will consist of as the tournament draw is this Sunday.
The Indians play again next Thursday as they host the London Red Raiders in the second match of the night, following the girls match.
