Burns’ 21 points lead Hillsboro to win over Eastern Warriors

HILLSBORO — The shooting of the Hillsboro Indians heated up Tuesday night in their first game of the 2023 calendar year, as a 21-point effort by Nic Burns lifted the Indians to a 70-53 non-conference win over the visiting Eastern Warriors.
In the battle of the Frontier Athletic Conference against the Southern Hills Athletic Conference, this one went to the FAC and Indians, as they had not only 21 points from Burns, but in all there were four Hillsboro players who finished with at least 13 points in the victory.
Burns’ totals included six two-point field goals, two 3-pointers and he finished 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Also for the Indians, Tate Davis totaled 17 points with three field goals and an 11-of-12 performance from the free-throw line. Bryce Parsons totaled 14 points with five two-point buckets, and he went 4-of-7 in his free-throw attempts. Dorian Stewart was the fourth member of the Indians to finish in double figures, totaling 13 points and going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Also for Hillsboro, Steven Kibler scored five points off one made basket and three made free throws on six attempts.
In the game against the Warriors, Hillsboro trailed one minute into the game following a 3-pointer from Eastern’s Kade Walkup but rebounded quickly with a jumper from Burns, and a steal and layup by Kibler, for a 4-3 advantage.
Eastern added five points to their side of the scoreboard with all five points by Luke Haney, only to see the Indians erase the four-point deficit with points scored by Parsons and Davis, tying the score at 8-8 with 4:26 left in the opening quarter.
The Indians eventually led 20-12 in the first with points from Stewart, Parsons and Burns for a 10-0 run with 1:44 left in the quarter. Eastern finished the quarter scoring with a long-range 3-pointer by Grady Barber, but HHS still held a five-point lead of 20-15 at the conclusion of the first frame.
Eastern gained momentum of the game and regained the lead in the second frame, outscoring the Indians 17-8 in the eight-minute quarter, taking a 32-28 halftime lead. In the quarter, HHS had two points each from Stewart, Davis, Burns and Parsons.
Hillsboro came out of the halftime locker room a whole new team as they amped up the pressure on both sides of the court, outscoring Eastern 20-5 in the third quarter for a 48-37 lead.
HHS opened the third with 11 consecutive points from the 6:54 mark of the quarter to the 3:54 mark, forcing the Warriors to call two timeouts.
The Indians’ 11-0 run began with a three-point play from Burns, followed by Burns connecting from the field with a jumper. After a timeout was called, the Indians were back to their scoring, this time from the free-throw line as Parsons and Stewart each scored points from the charity stripe.
Next was a 3-pointer from Burns with the Hillsboro student section cheering from behind, as Burns’ trey increased the Indians’ lead to 39-32 with 3:54 on the clock.
After a timeout by the Warriors, they scored their first points of the quarter with a free throw made by Caleb Jimison at the 3:39 mark of the frame, only to see the home team Indians have a bucket in the paint by Parsons and a free throw made by Kibler for a 42-33 advantage.
The Warriors scored two points to make it a seven-point game, but HHS responded with a layup by Parsons, a basket by Davis and two more points by Parsons, this time from the free-throw line, for a 13-point lead for HHS with 47 seconds left in the quarter. Eastern added two more points before the third came to a close, with the Indians leading 48-37.
The two teams’ offenses battled in the final quarter with Hillsboro winning the frame 22-16 and the game by 17 points.
In the final quarter, Burns sank a 3-pointer and made a two-point basket, while Davis made 11 free throws in the quarter. Kibler collected two made free throws in the fourth, while Stewart scored three points and Parsons rounded out the final frame scoring with a made free throw.
As for Eastern in the game, they were led in scoring by Kade Walkup with 14 points, followed by Caleb Jimison with 13 points. The rest of Eastern’s scoring included: Wyatt Haupt with eight points, Grady Barber (five points), Chris Young (three points), Drew Edmisten (three points), Luke Haney (five points) and Pryce Murphy (two points).
Eastern totaled 11 two-point baskets, nine 3-pointers, and were 4-of-7 from the free-throw line. Hillsboro finished 24-of-33 from the free-throw line, as they also had 20 two-point baskets and two 3-pointers.
The win moves Hillsboro to 5-7 overall, while Eastern drops to 4-7 for the season.
Next for Hillsboro is a game Friday night at home against the Jackson Ironmen in FAC action.
