The halfway point of the high school football season was completed this past Friday, and before the six teams of the Frontier Athletic Conference begin facing each other in the final five games of the regular season, the fifth week of the season had some special moments in non-conference action.
For starters, congratulations go out to McClain junior Andrew Potts for his 360 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns on 22 carries in three quarters against Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy. All anyone can say is “What a performance!” by the junior running back.
A game like that doesn’t happen often, and if it was a school rushing record (at the time of the article’s posting, some were unsure), then that performance is icing on the cake of a 48-14 win in Week 5.
The past two weeks for Highland County football has been something to watch because in Week 4 Hillsboro junior Austin Barrett rushed for 370 yards and five touchdowns in a game against Williamsburg.
What makes these performances so great is to see that both rushers are juniors, and has there ever been a time where two different Highland County football teams have running backs rush for over 350 yards and each score at least four touchdowns in consecutive weeks?
In the Week 5 performance by Potts, Highland County Press sports reporter Jim Jones also spoke highly of the performance by Potts and the Tigers’ offensive line as he wrote about the game. All in all, the Tigers and Potts deserve congratulations for that performance in Week 5.
Here are more thoughts from Week 5.
1. Three straight wins for the Hillsboro Indians is a huge way for the team to end the non-conference slate of the regular season. As competitive as the first five games were for HHS, they finished that part of the schedule with a 3-2 record.
Now the games mean a little bit more within the conference, and if there is more success ahead, that’s when things could get exciting, but for that to happen, more wins need to come.
2. Hillsboro’s Week 6 opponent, the Washington Blue Lions, continued their high-powered offense in Week 5 where they had 405 yards passing from Troy Thompson, who finished 30-of-47 for 405 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 17 yards and had a rushing score.
The Blue Lions’ defense allowed 88 yards in their Week 5 win against St. Charles, but St. Charles also had 251 yards rushing. Don’t sleep on Hillsboro in Week 6 against the strong Washington team, because if HHS gets their rushing game going, they can build long drives, control the clock and keep the Washington offense off the field.
3. The Chillicothe Cavaliers — McClain’s Week 6 opponent — are coming off a 24-0 win over Logan High School, and they held their opponent in Week 5 to 193 yards total offense, while the CHS offense saw Mason Doughty pass for 198 yards and two touchdowns for the Cavs. Max Lee of CHS had 13 carries for 81 yards rushing, and Miles Lewis caught two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.
CHS is one of the better teams in the FAC, and just like Hillsboro, if McClain can keep their strong rushing game going in Week 6 they can control the clock and keep the talented Chillicothe offense off the field. That will be key for MHS in this game.
4. The Miami Trace Panthers had to face the tough Western Brown Broncos where they lost 51-14. The Panthers’ rushing game was their strong point on Friday in Week 5 where they had Asher LeBeau finish with 17 carries for 125 yards and one touchdown.
In the loss, MTHS scored all 14 of their points in the fourth quarter. For the game, MTHS finished with 249 yards of total offense.
When FAC play starts this Friday, MTHS is scheduled to face Jackson, so for this two-week span, the Panthers are facing two of the best teams in the area, which isn’t an easy task by any means.
5. Jackson is coming off maybe their biggest win of the 2022 season thus far, which was a 20-12 win over Wheelersburg (at WHS) in Week 5, showcasing their abilities as they are still one of the best teams in the area.
JHS even trailed by nine points, so seeing a FAC team gain such a big non-conference win in Week 5 is huge for the conference. Jacob Winters finished 8-of-14 passing for 210 yards passing with two touchdowns.
6. With the start of the FAC games starting on Friday in Week 6, this is now the best time of the year for high school football because the conference title is now on the line. When that happens, the games themselves are more exciting, and it just makes for a better experience overall for the FAC.
