It was such an exciting night at Richards Memorial Field this past Friday night in Week 4 of the 2022 high school season, as records were set with junior Austin Barrett breaking the Hillsboro High School rushing record for a game with a 370-yard performance and five touchdowns.
Having the opportunity to see such a dominant rushing performance — plus the play of the offensive line and the rest of those who blocked on those runs was outstanding as well — was so much fun to watch, and the game itself was exciting too, with Barrett scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 20-yard run in overtime.
It was one of the greatest football games and greatest games of any sports I’ve had the chance to cover in the past 16 or so years in Highland County.
Congratulations to Austin Barrett and the rest of the Hillsboro team for such an outstanding performance in Week 4.
Now, for 6 more thoughts on Week 4 of the FAC:
1. The FAC as an entire conference was undefeated in Week 4, which is the first time that’s happened all season.
The results included:
Hillsboro 48, Williamsburg 41 (OT)
McClain 42, East Clinton 7
Chillicothe 42, Waverly 12
Jackson 41, Western Brown 35
Miami Trace 56, Goshen 7
Washington 42, Minford 0.
What also stands out with those six results is every single FAC team scored no less than 41 points in their win. It was a great night for the FAC, and with one week of non-conference games left on the schedule, it will be fun to see if a repeat performance can happen in Week 5 on Friday night.
2. The McClain Tigers got back on track, and what a game by junior Andrew Potts, rushing for 175 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, and the junior caught two passes for 47 yards. Plus there was Kaden Penwell with 60 yards on his six carries with two touchdowns, along with 50 yards receiving on three catches and a touchdown. That’s an excellent performance by those two, and a shoutout to MHS quarterback Drake Stapleton with 167 yards passing and two touchdown passes in the win as well.
Again, those numbers don’t happen without the offensive line and blockers for the Tigers, so they deserve some praise as well. It seems like it was a great team effort all around in McClain’s win over East Clinton.
3. Washington had another big-time scoring game, this time in Week 4 by defeating Minford by 42 points in the shutout win. Washington scored 14 points each in the first, second and fourth quarters. Their quarterback, Troy Thompson, was 20-of-24 for 266 yards with three touchdown passes, while the rushing leader was Tre Jackson with six carries for 69 yards and a touchdown run.
Also for the Blue Lions, Tanner Lemaster finished with six receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Washington seems to have a high-powered offense, and their defense can’t be overlooked with two consecutive shutouts to their credit. When FAC play begins, it will be fun to see this team compete against the rest of the conference, because from afar they seem like a very good football team.
4. Jackson had an impressive win over Western Brown on Friday and that’s a huge win for the Ironmen. Jackson is the team to watch in the FAC because they are better than their 2-2 record, and they’ve played a very strong schedule that has only made them a better team overall. When they get into FAC play as well, they are going to be very strong in the conference, as they are the defending champions.
5. Miami Trace scored the most points of any FAC team in Week 4 with their 56-point performance against Goshen.
The Panthers had a great game from running back Asher LeBeau with 19 carries for 192 yards and two touchdowns. They also had Garrett Guess finish with four receptions for 104 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Quarterback Trey Robinette was 7-of-9 for 176 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception.
I can’t wait to watch a Miami Trace game this season because they seem to have a balanced offense that would be fun to watch.
6. It was a balanced performance for the Chillicothe Cavaliers as well in Week 4, with quarterback Mason Doughty going 11-of-17 for 109 yards with one touchdown, followed by Max Lee having 12 carries for 110 yards and three touchdown runs.
There was also Coen Butler leading with one reception for an 83-yard touchdown in the win over Waverly. In all, CHS totaled 344 yards of offense, and their defense held WHS to 164 yards of offense.
This entire conference showed in Week 4 they have the ability to score points and play some defense, too. This final week of non-conference games should be entertaining, and then the second half of the season starts with FAC play, and that’s when the games will be even more competitive than they’ve already been.
