This past weekend of Frontier Athletic Conference football saw the Hillsboro Indians and head coach Nathan Horne earn their first win of the 2022 season, while the Washington Blue Lions showed they have a very high-scoring offense with a 48-point effort against the Paint Valley Bearcats.
The conference also saw McClain fall to Zane Trace and Chillicothe lose to Westerville North, plus Jackson and Miami Trace also lost their non-conference games in Week 3.
Here are six thoughts from this past Friday from Week 3.
1. It was great to see the Hillsboro Indians gain their first win of the ’22 season with a 44-27 win over the East Clinton Astros. HHS head coach Nathan Horne also earned his first career win as a head coach, so that’s always a good thing to see for any head coach.
Hillsboro showed what they are capable of with their rushing game in Week 3, with Austin Barrett, Dom Smart and Travis Ross all playing solid games for the rushing attack.
In the win, the top three rushers included Dom Smart with 15 carries for 175 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Austin Barrett totaled 89 yards rushing on 18 carries with one touchdown. Travis Ross finished with 75 yards on five carries, with one touchdown. This trio can bring some exciting moments for Hillsboro football for the rest of the season, plus the offensive line play was very solid as well, because we can’t forget about the big men up front.
2. McClain is still a good football team, even with a tough loss to Zane Trace in Week 3. ZTHS will be a competitive team in the Scioto Valley Conference in ’22 as they start conference play this Friday.
As for MHS, the Tigers are a young team, and this loss will only make them better down the road because it can be a learning experience for them.
3. Washington in their game had 500 yards of offense in Week 3 with 306 passing yards and 194 rushing yards as a team on 22 carries.
They have a very dangerous offense, and with the defense pitching a shutout against a Paint Valley offense that has shown this season they can put up points, the Blue Lions are one of the top teams to watch in the FAC this season.
4. Miami Trace had a strong first quarter where they scored 10 points against Logan Elm, but were held scoreless for the rest of their non-conference game.
Asher LeBeau was their leading rusher with 111 yards and a touchdown in the loss, but this is a team that will be fun to see when FAC play begins later this season.
5. The Chillicothe Cavaliers renewed an old rivalry with Westerville North in Week 3, and they almost came back for the win. CHS scored all of their points in the second half, falling by a 17-14 score.
They trailed 10-0 at halftime, so their second half saw them outscored Westerville North 14-7 in the final two quarters. Like many of the teams in the FAC, the Cavaliers have some talented players who will be fun to watch later this season in FAC action.
6. Jackson has played one heck of a schedule through three games, and they are a better team than their 1-2 record.
They lost Friday night by a 14-13 score to Tri-Valley, scoring all 13 of their points in the fourth quarter. In fact, both teams were scoreless in the first half, so like with Washington, Jackson is one of the stronger teams in the FAC, and the Ironmen are a team to watch as the ’22 season continues.
