The second week of the high school football season is in the books, and as the third games of the season near, it is time to take a look back at everything that happened in the Frontier Athletic Conference, plus give thoughts on Paint Valley football in the Scioto Valley Conference.
For Week 2, it was a good time to visit the Paint Valley Bearcats as they faced West Jefferson in a game that took nearly three hours, and a game that saw a combined 83 points. Though PVHS lost the game 49-34, it was an excellent game to watch with both teams playing with talented rosters.
West Jefferson’s offense had the ability to break out big plays at times, and that’s what they accomplished, but Paint Valley did some really nice things too on offense with the emergence of sophomore Carson Free. He had nine catches for 164 yards and a touchdown, and Free played one of the better games I’ve seen in quite some time.
Of course, the usual suspect being Cavan Cooper had a good game too, but also the offensive line of the Bearcats was excellent as well, and their play is going to be scary good as the season continues.
It was nice being at George Knisley Field once again to see the Bearcats play football, as it is one of the better places to catch a game at during the high school football season.
Now for six thoughts on the FAC following Week 2:
1. The Hillsboro Indians are going through some tough times at the moment on offense, but they will get things turned around for Week 3. They are finally getting to play at home for this first time this season, and that will be something to look forward to. Defensively, things were better for HHS as they allowed just 14 points in Week 2, so this upcoming Friday in Week 3 against East Clinton, the game should be competitive, and as football fans, that is all anyone wants to see.
2. Washington played a big scoring game against Western Brown in Week 2 where not only were the 94 combined points, but at 10 p.m. all the lights went out at Gardner Park … as the game was still being played. Even with that fun fact, there is more as Washington quarterback Troy Thompson was 22-of-36 for 289 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Also in that game — according to stats provided by Digital Scout — Tre Jackson led the Blue Lions with 16 carries for 72 yards and two rushing scores. Their receiving leader was AJ Dallmayer, who totaled seven catches for 127 yards with one touchdown. Tanner Lemaster finished with five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.
This Washington team will put up a lot of points this season, and this Friday they face Paint Valley, so for those wanting to see a game with two offenses who can score points, this may be the game you want to watch.
3. Miami Trace gained their first win of the ’22 season, and they defeated the Wilmington Hurricane, 28-22 in a battle of two former South Central Ohio League rivals. (Does anyone else miss that league, or is it just me?)
As for Miami Trace, it was Evan Colegrove leading the way with 17 carries for 63 yards, and Garrett Guess with six catches for 56 yards and three touchdowns in the win. It is good to see Miami Trace have a non-conference win after a tough Week 1 loss, and they battled hard for this one. MTHS won this game with 188 total offensive yards and had 50 plays on offense. They seemed to have made every play count in Week 2.
4. The Chillicothe Cavaliers gained the victory for Week 2, as they won by three points vs. London at a 27-24 score. Mason Doughty was 10-of-16 for the Cavs with 204 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus he had a rushing touchdown. Max Lee led CHS with 17 carries for 96 yards, while receiving Tayvion Galloway totaled two catches for 78 yards, while Tre King had three catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns. This is a team I’m excited to watch at some point this season, and for Week 3, they take on Westerville North.
5. Has any team had as tough of a schedule in the first two weeks of the ’22 season as the Jackson Ironmen? Week 2 saw JHS fall to Ironton by a 29-26 score, as that had to be a very competitive game to see. In the loss, JHS had 432 yards on offense, with Eli Broermann totaling 15 carries for 95 yards rushing to lead the team. Jacob Winter was 12-for-18 for 210 yards with four touchdown passes and one interception. At receiver, Brodie Butcher had three catches for 60 yards with two touchdown catches.
This is a team that will be very tough to stop in the FAC, but a team that will be fun to watch because of all of the talented players that have on their roster.
6. How about the McClain Tigers starting the season off at 2-0 for the second straight season? In Week 2, they defeated Northwest, 36-35. McClain QB Drake Stapleton was 9-of-17 for 157 yards with two touchdown passes. Andrew Potts led the way rushing — and had one heck of a defensive stop on the final play — with 30 carries for 175 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry and had three touchdowns.
Also on offense, Kaden Penwell totaled three catches for 76 yards, and teammate Max Eikenberry totaled 73 yards receiving on five receptions and two touchdowns. On defense, he had an interception.
The Tigers aren’t a team to sleep on this season, and they will make games competitive for their opponents. For Week 3, they face the 2-0 Zane Trace Pioneers at McClain Field, so this too should be another strong effort game from both teams.
