The Frontier Athletic Conference football teams were on the field this past Friday night, where they showed how competitive teams in the conference are for 2022. The FAC went 4-2 in Week 1 with Jackson, Chillicothe, Washington and McClain earning non-conference wins, while losses went to Miami Trace and Hillsboro.
Hillsboro played a “buzz saw” in Western Brown, who will be a very good team this season with their offense, especially senior quarterback Drew Novak, as he’s getting Division I looks entering his senior season and for good reason. In the 55-0 win over Hillsboro, Novak passed for 309 yards, four touchdowns, and even ran for a touchdown. This game also saw him surpass over 10,000 career passing yards, and he earned his 100th career touchdown pass as well.
Playing in the SBAAC (Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference), he is a player in the area to keep an eye on this season, and he continued to show he’s a very capable quarterback when it comes to playing at the collegiate level.
Now for thoughts on the FAC from Week 1. Here are six thoughts from the opening Friday night of high school football.
1. The FAC has some very talented players, and it showed after the first week when looking at some of the following numbers for offensive leaders:
- McClain’s Andrew Potts finished with 22 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Also for McClain, Kaden Penwell totaled 15 carries for 105 yards. At receiver for the Tigers, Max Eikenberry had four receptions for 89 yards.
- Miami Trace’s Trey Robinette at quarterback was 16-of-24 for 256 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception (stats from Digital Scout). Evan Colegrove led MTHS with 21 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Their leading receivers were Garrett Guess with seven catches for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Shay Salyers had three catches for 77 yards.
- Washington’s Troy Thompson was 17-of-25 for 307 yards with two touchdowns, while their leading rusher was Rocky Jones at four carries for 66 yards and one touchdown (stats by digital scout). Washington’s leading receivers were Tanner Lemaster with five catches for 108 yards and one touchdown, Jones at one catch for 89 yards and a touchdown, Isaiah Haithcock with six catches for 67 yards and AJ Dallmayer with five catches for 66 yards.
- Chillicothe’s Mason Doughty at quarterback was 12-of-21 for 144 yards with two touchdown passes. Max Lee led CHS with 13 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown. LSU commit Tayvion Galloway was the receiving leader for the Cavaliers with three catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns (stats from MaxPreps.com).
- Hillsboro’s leading rusher was Austin Barrett, who unofficially totaled 47 yards rushing for the Indians.
- Jackson’s Cade Wolford led the team with eight catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Winters at quarterback was 7-of-12 for 213 yards with two touchdowns. The receiving leader was Wolford with three receptions for 178 yards and two touchdowns (stats from The Telegram News).
2. When FAC teams face each other down the road, the conference matchups will be fun to see how games turn out. There are some talented teams in the FAC this season, and when some of the top teams in the conference face each other, who knows what will happen, but they hopefully can be competitive.
3. It is nice to see the McClain Tigers earn a win to start the ’22 season. This program went through a lot last season, and it is great to see this group of players battle in Week 1 and defeat the Adena Warriors, especially with two pick-6 plays — that’s a tough thing to achieve in a game once, but especially twice. Our Jim Jones reported in his game article that Emerson Yates and Conner Frazier were the two players who gained the interceptions for touchdowns.
4. The FAC had three quarterbacks pass for over 200 yards in their season-opening games. Those players are listed above (Trey Robinette of MTHS, Troy Thompson of WHS and Jacob Winters of JHS). Plus, CHS quarterback Mason Doughty threw for nearly 150 yards, so maybe the passing attack is the way to go in the FAC in 2022?
5. With that said about the passing game, the rushing games were very solid too in the FAC. Three players in the conference had over 100 yards rushing (Evan Colegrove of MTHS, Max Lee of CHS, Cade Wolford of JHS). There was also Andrew Potts of MHS with 94 yards, so maybe the league is just balanced? It is going to be a lot of fun to see how teams gain their points this season, whether it be via the pass or a hard-nosed rushing game.
6. With all of the coaching changes in the FAC this season (Keith Penwell at MHS, Nathan Horne at HHS, and Scott Bartholomew of CHS), it is going to be interesting to see how the ways these schools play now with the coaches putting in things how they want them. It is going to be exciting for sure.
