3 Highland County grapplers win sectional championships

WASHINGTON C.H. — Brandon Carter and Kordell Ford of Hillsboro, along with McClain's Brandon Davis, all were at the top of the class on Saturday as they represented Highland County with sectional wrestling championships in Division II.

The wins at Washington Senior High School for the two-day event gave Hillsboro two sectional champions and McClain one as Carter (a senior) won at 106 points, Ford (a junior) at 152 and Davis (a senior) at 220 pounds.

HHS also was second in the sectionals as a team, scoring 187 points. In first was Miami Trace with 211.5 points, and in third was Washington with 170.5 points. McClain was seventh out of 11 schools with 82 points.

The Indians had one runner-up in senior Connor Johnston, as he was second place in the 170-pound weight class.

In third for HHS were Matt West at 113 pounds, Ryan Kelley at 120, Toby Warrington at 126 and Craig Jackson at 138. For MHS, in third were Roscoe East at 170 pounds and Dylan Trefz at 285.

Coty Barnhart of MHS was fourth in the 132-pound weight class, while Hillsboro's Darian Schumacher (170), Drew Huffman (182) and Jordan Mosley (195) all were fourth place.

Fifth-place finishers included: Hillsboro's Cody Whaley (132) and Skylar Murphy at 220 pounds. Sixth-place finishes went to McClain's Kylee Stroud (106) and Lucas Unger (195).

As for the three champions, Carter defeated Jacob Boldman of Wilmington by pin fall at 3:49 in the first-place 106-pound match. Ford won his championship match at 152 pounds with a major decision (11-1) over Greenon's Keegan Shillito. Davis' championship win came with a pin fall of Tyler Ruley at 2:51 in the 220-pound match.

In their semifinal matches, Carter won with a pin fall at 1:54 over Israel Villarreal of Circleville. Ford won with a major decision (9-1) over Washington's Jimmy VanDyke. At 220 pounds in the semifinal, Davis pinned Logan Elm's Dustin Miller at 1:12.

Carter won his quarterfinal match with a pin fall win at 41 seconds over Porfirio Gonzalez of Shawnee. Ford won his quarterfinal match with a tech. fall (20-5) over Ethan Paul of McClain. Davis won his quarterfinal match with a 7-0 decision over Devin Bainter of Miami Trace.

Ford also had to wrestle in the first round, pinning Ty Ott of Shawnee at 2:28.

As for second-place Johnston (170), he won his quarterfinal match with a pin of Isaac Savage (MHS) at 4:51 and followed that up with a semifinal match win by pin fall over Isaiah Miller (Logan Elm) at 3:03. In the final, Johnston lost to Miami Trace's Travis Grooms by a 6-1 score.

Carter, West, Kelly, Warrington, Jackson, East, Davis, Murphy and Trefz all won three matches, while Ford won four.

Winning two matches were Whaley, Johnston, Schumacher and Mosley.

Earning one win were Jake Badgley (MHS), Coty Barnhart (MHS), Curran Butler (HHS), Ethan Paul (MHS) and Stroud (MHS).

The Division II District tournament will take place on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23 at Goshen High School. Friday will start at 2 p.m. and Saturday will start at 10 a.m.
