3 goals in each half lead Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs to victory over Hillsboro

HILLSBORO — The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs gained their 10th win of the ’22 season Tuesday night by going on the road and defeating the host and Highland County counterpart, the Hillsboro Lady Indians, with a 6-0 shutout win.
Lynchburg-Clay (10-1-1) scored three goals in each half. They also had two players score two goals apiece — those players being Kalyn Rich and Caitlyn Collins — with both scoring one goal in each half.
“I gave the girls Friday off, and we’ve played a tough schedule up to this point. We’ve got a couple starters who have been banged up a little bit, so I thought a night off wouldn’t hurt,” LCHS head coach Dennis West said. “We were looking forward to the game, and Hillsboro is always a challenge for us, and we were looking forward to playing them.
“In the second half, I thought we played really well and our ball movement was great. We had some good looks at the goal, and we got some really good play from girls who don’t start for us. Our bench is loaded this year. We are 24 players deep and try to play as many of them as we can. We don’t lose a lot with some of the girls, we just have younger girls who are playing behind a great senior class. They get their moments, and we had two or three who made the best of their opportunity.”
The first LCHS goal of the contest was scored by Jade Massey, as she was assisted by Karlie Tipton with 34:34 left in the first half off a cross kick.
Rich scored her first goal of the game with 33:29 on the clock as her goal was assisted by Miranda Smith, also off a cross kick, for the two-goal advantage.
The Lady Mustangs added another goal in the first half as Collins put the ball past the keeper off a corner kick from Tipton with 12:49 on the clock for a 3-0 advantage.
Tipton scored a goal with 28:00 left in the second half, as she was assisted by Rich on a through ball for a four-goal lead.
Rich then scored her second goal of the non-conference contest, as she also scored on a through ball with the assist from McKenna Roades with 22:26 left in regulation.
The final goal of the game came with Collins adding her second goal with an assist from Rich with a through ball with 12:50 on the scoreboard clock to give the Lady Mustangs a 6-0 advantage.
Allie Waits had two saves in the first half at goal for LCHS, while in the second half Ella Barry totaled two saves at goal for the Lady Mustangs.
As for the Hillsboro Lady Indians, head coach Amanda Miller spoke about the positives in the shutout loss.
“We had two players who stepped up, and those were our center-mid Rylie Scott. She stepped up and had a great game, controlling the middle of the field, and had a lot more talking, leading on the field,” Miller said.
“Also, Ramsey Haines, she’s our outside defender on the left side. She definitely stepped up, and she’s the oldest on the defense. She’s commenting back there and helping the younger players and helping them learn their positions. We are young, and we are still moving players around to find their spots.”
Next for LCHS is a home game Wednesday, Oct. 5 in a battle for first place in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference as they host Highland County rival and SHAC foe, the Fairfield Lady Lions.
“We have a big game Wednesday night against Fairfield, and I know they are looking forward to playing us, and we are looking forward to playing them,” West said. “It should be a pretty good match.”
LCHS enters the conference game with a SHAC record of 4-0-0, while Fairfield has a 4-0-1 record. LCHS currently has a 77-0-6 SHAC record without a loss (win/tie), an 83-game streak that began in 2010.
