100 and counting: Lady Indians rout MP; Molen gains win No. 100

MT. STERLING — It had been 12 days since the last time the Hillsboro Lady Indians took the field for a soccer match. It has been eight seasons since Hillsboro girls soccer coach Leslie Molen took over the Hillsboro soccer program. On Tuesday night at Madison-Plains High School, the wait was worth it.
The 10-0 South Central Ohio League win over the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles not only gave the Lady Indians their fifth win in six tries this season, but put Molen in elite company with the win being her 100th career coaching victory.
Her overall coaching record is 100-21-12.
"The 100 wins … it's all about the kids under you," Molen said. "If I didn't have quality kids to coach, 100 wins wouldn't be possible."
Molen took over the program after it had just four wins the previous season as she became the head coach in 2004.
"When I took over, I was just happy to get a win," Molen said with a smile. "This is just a milestone, not an accomplishment for me. There are bigger and better things to be accomplished."
The win on Tuesday at the home of the Golden Eagles put HHS at 5-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the SCOL.
HHS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, then controlled the entire second half with seven more goals.
"It was a good game to get started back with," Molen said. "We started slow, but I rewarded players who came to practices during the fair break, and once all the regular starters were back, we returned to our normal routine."
Hailey Wisman and Leah Pence led the Lady Indians with three goals each as both players finished with a hat-trick. Lauren Grimes had two goals, followed with one goal each from Jordan Davis and Madison Colliver.
The first goal of the match came from Pence with 33:28 left in the opening half, kicking the ball across the keeper. Her goal was assisted by Taylor Moberly.
Pence scored the second goal of the match at 26:22 by sending the ball past the MP keeper, with the assist from Taylor Stanforth.
The final goal of the first half was scored by Wisman with 6:47 remaining. Her goal was assisted by Kaylee Achor.
The second half began with a goal from Colliver with 36:46 left in the match. Other goals that followed included: Grimes (32:02, 1:33), Wisman (27:40, 14:02), Pence (9:52) and Davis.
Gaining assists in the second half were: Gabby Sugden, Pence, Trista Rhodes and Achor.
"In the second half, we did better than what I even expected," Molen said.
HHS will play again on Saturday as they host the Wilmington Lady Hurricane at Richards Memorial Field with a start time of 7 p.m. Next week, HHS will face SCOL opponents Washington on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. at Gardner Park and will host the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:15 p.m. at Richards Memorial Field. In their previous meeting this season at CMHS, HHS and CM tied 1-1.
