Around October every year, thousands of women from all over the world travel to North America to learn, savor and compete in the musical art of barbershop harmony.
This year, a group of these women from Dublin, Ohio, danced and sang their way to a fourth-place international medal among choruses from New Zealand, Sweden, England, Australia, and Canada.
The Scioto Valley Chorus, a first-time competitor at the Sweet Adelines International Competition, an organization of more than 600 choruses, performed two songs in the semifinals and four more songs in the finals to recieve a standing ovation from the packed Toyota Center Arena in Houston last month.
One of these proud performers is tenor Kristy Bockrath, an occupational therapist at the Adena Greenfield Medical Center.
Every Monday, she and 80 of her friends travel from around Ohio to the Columbus area to improve their four part a ccapella harmony and the choreography that accompanies their songs.
"Our goal as first-time International competitors was high, we wanted to be in the top ten so we would have the chance to perform in the finals," says Bockrath. "We never dreamed of being fourth worldwide!"
These ladies have not stopped to enjoy their victory for long, however; they are preparing for their annual fundraising show, the Scarlet & Gray Cabaret, and are focused on improving their scores at the Regional contest next April.

The Scioto Valley Chorus (SVC) is one of the most exciting musical organizations in the Central Ohio Arts Community. Chartered in 1988, the chorus now boasts members of all ages, interests, and occupations. The tie that binds us is a love of four part harmony, a desire to be an entertaining and exciting chorus, and a love and support for each other as a "family" of singers.
SVC is a member of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), an organization of 25,000 women worldwide dedicated to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. Each year, SAI's 600+ choruses compete in their local regions. SVC competes annually against choruses in East Central Region 4, an area that encompasses Kentucky, West Virginia, and parts of Ohio and Indiana. The first time the chorus competed was in 1988, the year SVC was founded. The chorus was awarded Novice Champion and came in sixth place overall. Since that time, the chorus has never placed lower than fifth overall and currently boasts 2nd place honors from the 2010 regional competition.
In 1999, Sweet Adelines International began dividing the competition by chorus size, with recognition going to small, midsize, and large choruses. SVC is a midsize (AA) chorus. SVC has been the Region 4 AA Division Champion eight times since 1999 (1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009.)
In 2001, SAI established the Harmony Classic, an international competition for the five small and midsize choruses who had the highest scores at their respective regional competitions. Scioto Valley has qualified for the Harmony Classic three times (2001, 2002, and 2005) and was crowned the International AA Champion in 2005! That same year, the chorus was invited to participate in the Buckeye Invitational, a competition of the leading men's and women's choruses from all over the world. The chorus was named the Grand Champion Chorus at that event. In 2009, SVC competed in the Harmony Classic competition for the fourth time - placing first with a record high score of 1350!
Scioto Valley Chorus is proud of our most recent accomplishment - 2012 Fourth Place International Chorus Medalists! The chorus competed in Houston, Texas against 32 other choruses from around the world. As the only rookies in the contest, SVC was proud to be counted among the best for the very first time.
