On April 6, the Alternatives to Violence Center staff met with Highland County Commissioners, who signed a proclamation declaring the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

"To raise public awareness around sexual violence, decrease myths, support victims and encourage survivors to seek services, AVC has a few events planned for Highland County," AVC director Julie Brassel said.

On Tuesday, April 5, victims of domestic and sexual violence assisted the agency in placing teal ribbons around trees within Hillsboro.

"Teal is the national color for Sexual Assault Awareness," Brassel said. "Each year, the agency assists hundreds of women, men and children who have been sexually assaulted or abused, most commonly at the hands of someone they know and typically trust."

On Monday, April 25, in collaboration with Jason Ratcliff of Empower Defense and Life Skills, a free female self-defense clinic will be held in Hillsboro at the old Hillsboro School cafeteria, located at 358 West Main Street. The class will begin at 6 p.m. and last until approximately 8:30 p.m. Space is limited. Female participants, ages 16 and up, are encouraged to call the agency to reserve their spot in this fun and educational class. Light refreshments will be served, as well as door prizes for participants.

For more information on events or services that AVC provides, please contact the Hillsboro Office at 937-393-8118. AVC is supported in part by the Cassner Foundation and the Office of Criminal Justice Services.[[In-content Ad]]
