For the 18th consecutive year, the popular Greenfield youth ministry New Directions will host a telethon on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 7-9 p.m.
After water damage and a ceiling collapse in December ruined most of the New Directions facility just months after the ministry opened their new location, the annual telethon comes at an appropriate time.
Last year’s emcees Tati Cunningham and student Terry Staten will return to host the event, along with Mike Shumate. The telethon, held in the McClain High School television studio, will be broadcast on Channel 3 for Greenfield-area Time Warner Cable customers, and New Directions Director of Youth Ministries Mike Anderson said that the fundraiser will be broadcast periodically on WVNU (97.3 FM).
The two-hour fundraiser will include local students and adults sharing their musical talents, both vocal and instrumental. In addition, those unfamiliar with New Directions will be able to learn more about their activities throughout the night.
“We will be putting spotlights on various ministry programs we do throughout the year, giving the community the opportunity to make a donation to support them,” Anderson said.
New Directions’ new youth center, located at the former Freshour’s Video Store at 251 Jefferson Street, had $40,000 worth of renovations done and was open just nine months when a burst pipe in the apartment above the center destroyed much of the interior.
Anderson said that during the telethon, they will discuss the “grand re-opening” of the youth center, adding that he hoped the youth center would be fully restored and operational by the time the telethon is held.
“We were only open nine months when the water did over $25,000 worth of damage,” Anderson said. “The professional contractors have done a great job, and we’re way ahead of schedule.”
Anderson said that early donations are already pouring in, and they have nearly reached the $10,000 mark.
“Our goal is $20,000,” Anderson said. “We’ve come very, very close the past few years, so I hope we are able to reach that goal.”
New Directions, which was founded in 1989, serves young adults in grades 7-12. Students attending the ministry’s programs are involved in a number of non-denominational church activities, including Bible studies, volunteering, and leadership training, according to the organization’s website.
New Directions provides a positive environment for group activities.
Currently, New Directions is open for teens to enjoy SoulFire, their Thursday night worship and live band night from 7-9 p.m., and Saturday morning basketball at the Greenfield Armory from 10-12 a.m. Anderson said that the youth center is also now open from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday evenings for youths to do their homework, enjoy the coffee bar, play games, and interact with their friends.
Donations may be sent to New Directions at P.O. Box 26, Greenfield, Ohio, 45123, or you may call the telethon’s studio at (937) 981-7731 during the two-hour fundraiser only.

“We’re really thankful for the ongoing support of the community,” Anderson said.[[In-content Ad]]
