Leesburg Lions to host Canine Companions

The Leesburg Lions Club will host Bud and Esther Brown of Vandalia, volunteer puppy raisers for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), at their monthly meeting to be held on April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Leesburg United Methodist Church.
Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) was founded in 1975 and is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
They train four types of assistance dogs: Service Dogs, Skilled Companions, Hearing Dogs and Facility Dogs. The dogs are partnered with adults with physical disabilities to assist with daily tasks and increase independence by reducing reliance on other people. They can flip a light switch, pick up dropped keys, open a door, push elevator buttons, alert their partners to incoming e-mail or phone messages, and even assist with business transactions by transferring money, receipts and packages. And they not only assist with physical tasks, but also provide emotional and social support.
CCI also welcomes the assistance of volunteer puppy raisers. For people with extra space in their hearts and homes, volunteer puppy raising is an incredible way to help people with disabilities live more independent lives. Volunteer puppy raisers provide these specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.
