Highland District Hospital to host Cincinnati Children's Hospital Genetic Clinic

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center will begin offering a genetic clinic at Highland District Hospital twice a year beginning on December 8, 2011, with an additional clinic being held May 10th, 2012. The clinic is moving from its current location at Hills and Dales School.
The Clinic will be staffed by Dr. Elizabeth Schorry along with a genetic counselor and will allow patients to be seen in a more appropriate clinical setting. Services offered at the clinic include: assessment, medical management, screenings for genetic conditions and genetic counseling for prenatal patients, infants, children, adolescents and adults.
Cincinnati Children’s strives to make high quality pediatric healthcare accessible to as many families as possible. Both institutions hope this clinic will not only improve access to these services but also create awareness around genetic related conditions and illnesses.
Dr. Schorry said she is looking forward to seeing patients at the new Highland District Hospital location, "We have been providing genetic outreach services to Highland, Adams, and Brown Counties for over 20 years, to accommodate the needs of patients who have barriers preventing them from traveling to Cincinnati or other large cities for specialized medical care. We are excited about our opportunity to now offer genetic services for families at the Highland District Hospital."
The clinic will serve:
• Individuals with intellectual disabilities or developmental delays;
• Individuals and families with a history of cleft lip/palate, congenital heart defects, spina bifida, or other birth defects;
• Individuals and families with genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, Huntington disease, neurofibromatosis, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, PKU, hemophilia and other inherited disorders;
• Individuals with a history of multiple miscarriages, stillbirth or early infant deaths, women age 35 and over who are pregnant, pregnant women at high risk due to abnormal MSAFP, ultrasound screening tests, or concerned about effects of exposures.
Individuals in specific ethnic groups or from geographic areas with a higher incidence of certain disorders, such as Tay Sachs disease, sickle cell disease or thalassemias
