HCP columnist reports from U.S.-Mexico border

Highland County Press columnist and Greater Cincinnati area attorney Eric Deters recently dispatched his "Bulldog Nation" news team to Nogales, Arizona for a firsthand look at the criminal activity along the U.S.-Mexico border.

On December 23, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Port of Nogales, Ariz. stopped an alleged attempt to smuggle $756,000 in heroin and cocaine into the United States. Officers also stopped more than $120,000 in undeclared cash from leaving the U.S.

Officers reportedly seized four and a half pounds of heroin and 12 pounds of cocaine, worth a combined estimated street value of $756,000. A 61-year-old man from Mexico, was arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.

 Early on Dec. 15, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, 40, of Michigan, was shot and killed border after agents reportedly located suspected bandits known for targeting illegal immigrants along a violent smuggling corridor, according to National Border Patrol Council President T.J. Bonner.
