Four-car crash under investigation

FRUITDALE – The Chillicothe Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a four vehicle injury crash that occurred at 6:42 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 on state Route 41 near milepost 12 in Ross County.
According to the OHSP, Christopher R. Mathews, 23, of Waverly, was operating a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on SR 41. Peggy A. Penwell, 33, of Bainbridge, was operating a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, northbound on SR 41. Sue E. Eckhart, 60, of Galloway, was operating a 2005 Toyota Prius also northbound on SR 41. James D. Williamson, 32, of Latham, was operating a 2003 Honda Odyssey southbound on SR 41.
Mr. Mathews was attempting to pass Ms. Penwell, when Mr. Mathews struck Mr. Williamson’s vehicle, head-on.
Occupants in Mr. Williamson’s vehicle consisted of Heather Williamson, 27, of Latham, and their three children, Shawn, 5, Riley, 2 and Liam, 1.
Mr. Williamson was mechanically extracted from the vehicle and flown from the scene to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Mrs. Williamson and all three children were transported by EMS to the Greenfield Medical Center. Mrs. Williamson was later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital, while Riley was transferred to Miami Valley Children's Hospital.
Occupants in Mr. Mathews’s vehicle consisted of Misty M. Mathews, 23, of South Charleston and their 3-month-old daughter, Destiny. After impact the Mathews’ vehicle caught fire. Witness Joe Jones and an unidentified female witness pulled Mr. and Mrs. Mathews from the burning vehicle only to learn that the 3-month-old child was still inside. Mr. Jones broke the rear glass and pulled the child from the vehicle just before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. Mr. and Mrs. Mathews were flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton for their injuries. Destiny was transported to Greenfield Hospital for precautionary reasons and was released.
Occupants of the Chevrolet and the Toyota were treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.
The incident remains under investigation.
