On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the Highland County Grand Jury issued an indictment against Christopher L. Hilderbrandt, 30, of Highland County.
The indictment was for one count of sexual battery, a felony of the third degree.
The indictment is the result of allegations issued to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office that Hilderbrandt, who was a corrections officer at the time, was engaging in inappropriate relationships with inmates.
An internal investigation was opened on June 25, 2010, which involved interviews of current and former inmates. On July 8, 2010, Hilderbrandt resigned his position with the Sheriff’s Office.
Due to the information gathered during the investigation, the case was forwarded to Highland County Prosecutor James Grandey for review by his office on Aug. 24.
On Oct. 19, the Highland County Grand Jury heard the case and found probable cause to believe that an indictment for sexual battery should be issued, due to the alleged behavior and the fact that Hilderbrant was a corrections officer at the time of the alleged offense.
Hilderbrandt served as a corrections officer with the Sheriff’s Office from July 5, 2004, until his resignation on July 8, 2010.
Hilderbrant was served with the indictment and taken into custody on October 20, 2010 and was arraigned via video from the Highland County Justice Center before the Honorable Rocky A. Coss from the Highland County Common Pleas Court. His bond was set at $2,500 cash or surety.
Hilderbrant was released just before noon on Oct. 20 after posting the bond.
