First wave of winter storm strikes the region

On standby since just after midnight, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) have taken to the highways this morning as a much-anticipated winter storm moves into the area.
District 9 snowplow operators began patrolling routes during the early morning hours in preparation for a storm that was originally predicted to strike before the morning commute. Crews in Adams, Brown and Highland counties are now putting down salt, grit and calcium chloride to routes along the state highway system as the snow is starting to stick and pavement is wet, slick and becoming lightly snow covered.
While crews will be working to combat snow and ice throughout this winter storm, motorists are urged to practice safe driving winter skills, and they are reminded to proceed with caution and heed the following:
Speed & Distance – The faster you’re going, the longer it will take you to stop; excessive speed continues to be one of the leading factors for crashes in ice and snow.
Brake – Brake early, brake slowly and brake correctly; never slam on your brakes.
Vision – Be aware of what’s going on well ahead of you; actions by other drivers will alert you to problems more quickly.
Motorists are also advised to be especially cautious when traveling over bridges and overpasses, which are likely to freeze more quickly than the roadway. It also important to note that visibility can be reduced significantly during inclement weather, and travel conditions can change from mile to mile and minute to minute.[[In-content Ad]]
