Division of Liquor Control promotes responsible alcohol use as Ohioans head to DORAs, events and patios
With warmer weather upon us, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control reminds Ohioans there are restrictions on where adults can enjoy alcoholic beverages. This is especially important as many businesses and consumers gear up for patio season and community events that take place within Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs).
“Warmer temperatures and outdoor gatherings are perfect for enjoying everything Ohio has to offer,” Division Superintendent Jackie DeGenova said. “We urge everyone to follow state laws and make responsible choices when it comes to alcohol consumption. By doing so, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all.”
Before Ohioans grab their hats and sunglasses and head to their favorite spot, the Division is highlighting the following key reminders for Ohio consumers regarding alcohol laws and social responsibility:
• Permit Premises: Ohio law prohibits patrons from taking alcohol-based drinks from A liquor permit holders’ establishment. This includes special events that have received a temporary liquor permit. Some establishments may temporarily expand their permit premises with proper approval, so consumers should always look for posted signage and staff guidance to verify where alcohol can be legally consumed.
• Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs): Ohio has more than 160 DORAs, which offer exceptions to open container laws within approved boundaries. Within these areas, consumers can purchase drinks from a permit-holding establishment and consume them in approved containers within DORA boundaries. Consumers are reminded that outside alcohol cannot be brought into a DORA, and participating businesses that are not liquor permit holders have the option of not allowing DORA beverages inside their place of business. Local rules, hours of operation, and boundaries can vary from DORA to DORA. More information, including a map of where all of Ohio’s DORAs are located, is available at com.ohio.gov/DORAs.
• Social Responsibility: Alcohol consumption is limited to individuals 21 and older. Those of legal age should never provide alcohol to anyone underage. Patrons are also encouraged to drink water, eat a meal, and plan transportation ahead of time to ensure safety. Permit holders and their staff are reminded to always check IDs at the point of sale and not serve patrons who are intoxicated.
• Reporting Violations: Suspected violations of Ohio liquor laws should be reported to local law enforcement or the Ohio Investigative Unit for appropriate action.
