Hillsboro High School student Desarai Griffith won this year's annual speech/essay contest, sponsored by the Hillsboro Rotary Club, during the club's Tuesday meeting and luncheon at the Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro.

Desarai delivered an insightful and, at times, emotional speech on the topic of foster parenting.

Desarai is the adopted daughter of Jeff and Ingrid Griffith of Hillsboro.

For her efforts, Desarai will advance to the district competition at Wittenberg University on April 3. She also received a $300 first prize.

The second-place winner was Tanner Ayres of Fairfield High School. Keith Fife, also of Fairfield High School, placed third.

Speakers were encouraged to incorporate the Rotary Four-Way Test in each of their respective speeches:

• Is it the TRUTH?

• Is it FAIR to all concerned?

• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

All three local finalists qualified for scholarship funds, courtesy of the Hillsboro Rotary Club.

Rotarian Keith Chambers and Rotary Club President Suzanne Hopkins thanked all of the contestants for participating in the annual contest. In addition to Chambers and Hopkins, committee members included: Katy Farber, Amatha Farrens, Sharon Cornette, Dr. Phil Burwinkel and Sue Smith.

This year's judges were the Rev. Derek Russell, Pam Stricker and Rory Ryan.
