The Southern Ohio Power Boat Association members took four top honors at the American Power Boat Association and Region 6 Spring 2009 season awards banquet held at the Holiday Inn French Quarters in Perrysburg.

* Dean Davis, race director, and his wife, Charlene Davis, financial secretary of the SOPBA, received the C.A. "Joe" Kreitzer Memorial and MACH Series Special "Spirit" Award.

Each year, this award goes to someone in the APBA and Region 6 area who does outstanding service to continue keeping the spirit of the hydroplane boat races going in the Region 6 racing area.

* Dr. Paul and Wahnita Yinger, owner of the National Modified Hydroplane boat, the NM333 "GOTCHA," sponsored by Highland County Veterans Honor Guard and driven by Jack "Jackie" Meyer of Lousiville, Ky., were also honored.

Doc Yinger, race commodore, received the High Point Region 6 Championship Award and the Mid-American Championship Hydroplane (MACH) Series' High Point National Modified Class Award.

Meyer received the MACH Series "TOP" National Modified Driver Award for 2009.

Yinger's boat is a national modified, powered by a 350 Chevrolet engine with 600+ horsepower. It reaches top speeds in excess of 130 mph.

Eighteen world speed records have been set at the Thunder in the Hills annual hydroplane boat race at Rocky Fork Lake in the past 22 years. It is the longest continuous race in the Region 6 Inboard area, which includes Ohio, Michigan, Northern Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania.

This year, the 23rd annual Thunder in the Hills race at Rocky Fork Lake will be held Sept. 18-19. For more information about the race or setting up at the race in the craft and flea market area, contact Dean Davis at (937) 393-1153.

"We would like to thank everyone in the area for their annual support of Thunder in the Hills," Davis told The Highland County Press this week. "Your support is greatly appreciated."[[In-content Ad]]
