Chamber of Commerce hosts July 29 legislative forum at SSCC

Join the discussion July 29 at Southern State Community College and learn how the many legislative issues on the state and federal levels affect your business. The day begins with a continental breakfast and networking followed by informative breakout sessions (10 a.m. - 11:50 a.m.) led by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce legislative team.
Topics will be:
Ohio’s Campaign for Jobs: The State Budget – This session will cover all of the major policy reforms included in the state operating budget from Medicaid and education reforms to tools to help local governments collaborate and share services. It will also review the successes accomplished by Ohio’s Campaign for Jobs, a state-wide grassroots campaign led by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. The campaign was instrumental in helping to pass the reforms in the state budget. Presenters will be Matt Forney, the Ohio Chamber’s Managing Director of Governmental Affairs and Merle Madrid, Manager of Political and Candidate Education.
Energy & Environment – Jennifer Klein, the Ohio Chamber’s Director of Energy & Environmental Policy, will provide an update on key issues including: the Common Sense Initiative, a state regulatory reform program headed up by Lt. Governor Mary Taylor; federal regulatory issues; Ohio’s new oil & gas drilling statute; and the Ohio Shale Coalition, a broad-based educational effort on the economic benefits of shale drilling.
Labor & Employment – Tony Seegers, the Ohio Chamber’s Director of Labor & Employment Law will cover the details of what’s in SB 5, the collective bargaining reform legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly in March. He’ll also provide an update on the state’s unemployment compensation fund, and the workers’ compensation program.
Tax & Economic Development – Dan Navin, Assistant Vice President of Tax & Economic Policy at the Ohio Chamber, will cover the tax changes included in the state’s operating budget including elimination of the estate tax. He’ll also provide an update on JobsOhio, Gov. Kasich’s new private-sector approach to economic development, as well as an overview of current business and economic development policy issues.
Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a Legislative panel of local, state and federal elected officials. This will be your time to address specific issues important to you by Q & A with the panel members.
Advocacy begins at the local level.
