Certified Athletic Trainers and students in the field had a very unique method of learning at a recent seminar held at Adena Medical Center's PACCAR Medical Education Center. The use of a live video feed during sports-injury related procedures provided attendees with the opportunity to witness surgery as it happens.
Three patients consented to having their surgeries performed by Brian Cohen, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Adena, and broadcast during the seminar. The surgeries included shoulder stabilization, ACL reconstruction, and rotator cuff repair. Through high-tech capabilities, a live video feed was made possible from the surgical suites at Adena to the Kenworth Auditorium at the PACCAR Medical Education Center, located on the campus of Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe, all the while maintaining complete patient confidentiality and privacy. According to Shane Wells, Certified Athletic Trainer at Adena, the method of learning was one of the first in the area specifically for athletic trainers.
"We were very excited to offer this feature to increase the learning curve for attendees at the seminar," Wells said. "Having the opportunity to see the surgery live provides athletic trainers with the opportunity to actually see the bones, muscles and ligaments that we are working on from the outside. What makes this type of observation beneficial for athletic trainers is that it provides a better way of understanding how body parts become injured and how our role aids in the prevention or treatment of sports injuries."
Certified Athletic Trainers from throughout the region and students from Wilmington College were in attendance and also had the opportunity to participate in a live question and answer session with Dr. Cohen. Students appreciated the opportunity to see the surgeries and apply what they learned in their clinical settings.
"This was a very unique learning opportunity for the athletic trainers, and a chance for the PACCAR Medical Education Center to showcase its limitless educational resources," Dr. Cohen commented. "The Adena Bone and Joint Center plans on utilizing additional live surgical procedures for upcoming seminars and symposiums."
Wells reported that the seminar is planned again for this year on Nov. 5, 2010, and will feature another live surgical observation.
