Slow start leads to Fairfield loss to Greyhounds

MANCHESTER — Though the Fairfield Lions outscored the Manchester Greyhounds combined in the final three quarters, it wasn't enough to overcome the nine-point first quarter deficit, as the Lions fell to the Manchester Greyhounds 58-53 Saturday night at MHS.
The Southern Hills League loss sends the Lions to a 4-2 league mark with an overall record of 6-5. The Greyhounds improve to 5-3 in the SHL and 7-4 overall.
FHS trailed 18-9 after the first frame, but after that, the Lions outscored the Greyhounds by four points with a 16-11 second quarter and 17-16 third frame. In the final quarter, Manchester outscored the Lions 13-11.

"We are a team that, I promise, will not make excuses," FHS head coach Matt Carson said. "We will do our best to correct our flaws and move forward.
"We started sluggish, but our kids came back and fought hard."
Travis Combs led the Greyhounds with 20 points, followed by teammates Dalton West with 13 and Kyle Adams with 12 points in the win over FHS.
Combs scored his 1,000th point in the game.
For the Lions, Gage Montgomery led with a team-high 16 points. Montgomery sank five two-point buckets and one 3-pointer, along with a 3-of-5 night from the free-throw line.
Quentin Williams, who was in foul trouble during the game, followed with 12 points. Williams sank one 3-pointer with two two-point baskets. He was 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Brad Clay finished with 10 points, going 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. As a team, the Lions were 18-of-24 (75 percent) from the free-throw line.
Also scoring for the Lions were: Austin May (3), Elijah Carmean (4), Austin Hildebrant (2), Wes Willey (2) and Cole Putnam (4).
"We out-rebounded them (Manchester), but we just didn't connect with our shots," Carson said. "I was impressed with the spark Gage gave us, and I was impressed with our team's no-quit attitude.
"I also want to congratulate Travis Combs on his 1,000th point. He's a great player."
The Lions will play again on Friday, Jan. 13 when they host SHL rival Peebles with JV starting at 6 p.m. In between the JV and varsity games, Fairfield will honor the SHL and district champion Fairfield boys cross-county team.
