One big inning sends Lions to 2nd loss

FAYETTEVILLE — A three-run third inning by the Fayetteville Rockets proved to be just enough to overtake the Fairfield Lions, Thursday at Fayetteville High School. The Lions' four hits and one run weren't enough to catch up with their Southern Hills League rival, falling in their league matchup, 3-1.
The loss puts FHS at 1-2 overall, 1-1 in the SHL.
Miah Call earned the complete game win for the Rockets, pitching seven innings of four-hit baseball. Call also walked two and the one run scored by the Lions was earned. He struck out six.
Tyler Campbell (0-2) was charged with the loss. He also pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks in his second start of the season.
The big third inning by the Rockets consisted of a two-out rally where Schmidt scored on a Peters base hit, followed with runs scored by Peters and Shaw. Peters scored on a single by Shaw. Shaw scored on a dropped third strike.
Fairfield's lone run came in the fourth inning.
Nathaniel Miller began the inning with a six-pitch walk. With Chase Fulkerson entering the game as a pinch runner for Miller, he stole second and scored on a Kyle Carson ground out to third.
FHS left four runners stranded, including two in the seventh inning.
The Lions (1-2) tried to rally in the last inning when Carson hit a one-out single. Carson was forced out at second when Campbell reached first on a fielder's choice. Dakota Hargrave followed with a two-out base hit, but FHS was unable to bring runners around the bases, committing the third and final out.
The other hit by FHS was a one-out single by Ian Adams in the third inning.
FHS will play again on Tuesday, April 5 at North Adams. Friday's game vs. Lynchburg-Clay has been postponed until April 22.
