DODSONVILLE — After suffering a season-opening loss to the McClain Tigers, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustang boys soccer team has won two straight games, defeating the Ripley Blue Jays and Fairfield Lions, both home games, improving to 2-1 on the season.
Against Ripley, a non-league match on Aug. 24, the Mustangs were led by senior Wesley Pierson with a goal in each half for the 2-0 win.
"This was a very close match. Our defense held Ripley offense to 15 shots," LC coach Dennis West said. "We are playing much better, and our passing is improving.
"What I like is our younger players are getting more confident."
LC finished the game with 18 shots at goal.
Pierson scored his first half goal near the start of the opening 40 minutes, putting the ball into the back of the net with 37:38 on a kick from 25 yards out.
Pierson sealed the win with a late goal in the second half, as he made a goal with 1:07 left on the clock off a short pass from Alex Pinkerton.
LC keeper Matt West had eight saves on the night, while Ripley keeper Tyler Grayson had five saves.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Mustangs defeated rival Fairfield 4-1, with three goals in the second half to defend their home field.
LC was first to score with Pinkerton scoring on a unassisted goal as he beat the Lions' defense with 27:10 left in the first half.
The Lions tied the score with Blake Hildebrant scoring on a rebound off the keeper.
Once the second half began, it was all Mustangs until the final buzzer sounded.
Chaz Lanier beat the FHS defense to score a goal with 32:08 left in the second half, giving LC a 2-1 advantage.
Pinkerton came back with his second goal of the match, scoring off a pass by Gage Waits with 22:33 left on the scoreboard clock.
"This was a really close game until we scored our third goal," West said. "This was a very good effort by our offense."
The final LC goal was scored with 15:21 remaining when Josh Bauer scored off another pass from Waits (his second assist of the match).
West finished with eight saves for the Mustangs at keeper, and Wilson had nine saves for the Lions.
"Our young players are beginning to grasp our offense, and as a result they are taking better (and more) shots," West said.
The Mustangs will travel to Peebles on Wednesday to face the Indians.
