WEST UNON - The Fairfield Lions continued their early winning path through the Southern Hills League Friday at West Union. The Lions used extra base hits from Nathaniel Miller, along with a complete game from Tyler Campbell, to gain a 5-4 win over the Dragons.
Miller was on fire with the bat Friday as he went 2-for-4, knocking in three runners and scoring once, having a hand in four of the five Lion runs.
The junior scored his run in the top of the first inning as he reached on a double, with a 2-2 count, while battling against two outs. He was scored on a base hit by Campbell.
The Dragons scored four times in the bottom of the fourth. All four runs were unearned as the Lions committed three errors in the inning.
The fifth inning began with a scary moment as Austin Hilterbrant was beaned in the face by a pitch. He had to leave the ball game and later received five stitches to his chin. Hilterbrant was replaced on the bases by Michael Carson.
Jordan Boles later forced a walk. He was replaced at first by Nathan Hawkins. Both scored when Miller doubled in the pinch runners. Again the two-base hit came with two outs.
Still trailing at the top of the seventh inning, Boles reached first via single for the Lions. Boles was safe at second on a fielder's choice attempt, and reached third on a wild throw.
The bases became loaded with Bobby Wilson being hit by a pitch and with Ian Adams reaching the bases on the aforementioned fielding error.
Miller gained his third RBI of the game with a ground out to first, scoring Boles. Adams took home on a wild pitch with two outs.
The win was credited to Campbell as he pitched all seven innings. Campbell allowed four runs (none earned) on seven hits and four walks. Campbell struck out eight batters.
Miller and Hargrave each had two hits for the Lions. FHS finished with seven hits.
The win lifts FHS to 4-1 overall, 4-0 in the SHL.
