Mangus qualifies for Division III State 3200m run

Fairfield junior Michael Mangus is headed back to a state tournament for the second time during the 2012-13 school year, this time for his track-running ability.
Mangus raced in the 3200-meter run at the Division III Lancaster Regionals Friday, finishing in fourth place with a time of 9:45.91, becoming the first track and field athlete in Fairfield school history to earn a spot in the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships. Mangus beat fifth place by nearly 19 seconds, as the top four placers qualified for the state meet.
[[In-content Ad]]The junior runner placed 14th in the Division III State Cross-County Championships earlier this school year. Mangus is a two-time state qualifier in cross-country.
At the Oak Hill track and field districts this spring, Mangus had a time of 9:59.8, and in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference meet, he ran a time of 10:25.3.
Last year, in the regionals, Mangus had a time of 10:15.01.
By qualifying for state, Mangus was also named Academic All-Ohio. To qualify for an OATCCC Academic All-Ohio award, an athlete must be a state meet qualifier and/or participant with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Mangus will race at the Division III State Championships on Saturday, June 8 in the 3200m run around 11:30 a.m.
Also at the Division III regionals, Whiteoak senior Clarissa Johnson raced in three events to end her high school career.
Johnson finished ninth in the 300m hurdles in the prelims with a time of 49.50. Johnson was 11th in the prelims of the 100m dash at 13.32, and in the 200m dash prelims, she finished 13th at 28.18.
Lynchburg-Clay freshman Alexa Cochran was 11th in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04.38.
The FHS 4x800m relay team of John Cain, Matthew Leach, Dustin Willey and Mangus finished 15th at 9:12.65.
