Lions washed away by Hurricane

     WILMINGTON - With one inning complete the Fairfield Lions and Wilmington Hurricane were even at two. But a seven-run second inning by the Hurricane washed away any hope of a FHS non-league win, as WHS defeated the Lions 11-5.
     Both teams hit the ball with WHS gaining 12 hits and the Lions finishing with 11.
     The first two FHS runs came with one out in the top of the first.
     Bobby Wilson reached first base after being hit by a pitch. Tyler Campbell moved Wilson closer to home with a single. Nathaniel Miller followed with an RBI single to plate Wilson. Dakota Hargrave reached on a fielders choice to score Campbell.
     In the top part of the fourth Ian Adams began with a lead-off double. Wilson reached the bases safely on an error by the Hurricane. With one out, Miller gained his second RBI, knocking in Adams with a base hit.
     Down 11-3 headed into the final inning, the Lions salvaged two runs.
     Hargrave singled and stole second to start the inning for FHS. Cody Tolle singled in Hargrave in the ensuing at-bat.
     Nathan Hawkins entered the game as a pinch runner for Tolle. Michael Carson followed by taking first after being hit by a pitch.        
     Down to their final out Adams singled in Hawkins.
     The Hurricane scored two runs in the first and seven in the second for a 9-2 lead. WHS tacked on one run in both the fifth and sixth innings.
     Adams led the Lions with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate.
     Miller was charged with the loss. Campbell pitched 4 2-3 innings in relief. Campbell allowed three hits, two runs (two earned) and one walk. He finished with two strikeouts.
     For the Hurricane hitting leaders included: Nick Brannon 1-for-1, (double) one run, one RBI; Brandon Arehart 1-for-3, (double) two runs, one RBI; Brady Camp 2-for-4, (two doubles) two runs, three RBIs; Dillon Day 3-for-4 (double, home run) two runs, three RBIs; Cody Shaver 2-for-3, one run, two RBIs; Heath Blanford 1-for-2 (double); Aaron Story one run, Matt Steele 1-for-2,  one run; Nick Eden one run and Caleb Mitchener 1-for-3, one RBI.
    The loss drops the Lions to 9-11 overall, with a Southern Hills League record of 7-6.
    FHS is scheduled to face the McClain Tigers Friday at FHS with a start of 5 p.m.
