Lions grand in win over Blue Jays

    LEESBURG - Twenty-one runs in four innings at the plate. The Fairfield Lions were hitting on all cylinders from the batter's box on Wednesday as they easily defeated the Ripley Blue Jays 21-2 at Fairfield High School.
    The Southern Hills League win came with the Lions gaining 14 hits, but they committed three errors in their five trips to the field.
    But at the plate, the Lions had half their hits in the first inning with 10 runs scored.
    The bottom of the first started with Ian Adams taking first on an error by the Blue Jays' pitcher. After reaching first, the junior stole second and advanced to third on an error, which also allowed Bobby Wilson to safely reach first. Nathaniel Miller forced a walk to load the bases with no outs.
    With the bases jammed, Fairfield's Tyler Campbell made the game grand with a grand-slam home run, on a 2-2 count, to center field.
    As the Lions led by four runs, Dakota Hargrave tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Tolle. Kyle Carson then singled and stole second base. He was joined on the bases by Austin Hilterbrant with a six-pitch walk. Carson scored on a double by Jordan Boles.
    Adams stepped into the batter's box for the second time in the inning and this time reached with a single to score Hilderbrant. Wilson then gained his first RBI of the game with with a base hit, followed with a double by Miller, scoring Adams and Wilson.
    In the third, FHS scored five runs with Michael Carson starting the inning with a five-pitch walk. WIth a walk forced by Wilson, Michael Carson touched home on an infield error. Hargrave hit an RBI base knock to bring home Wilson. Tolle scored Tyler Campbell on a fielder's choice. Kyle Carson finished the five-run FHS inning with a two-run home run to put the Lions up 15-1.
    The bottom of the fourth saw FHS runs scored by Chase Fulkerson, Michael Carson, Nathan Hawkins, Miller, Campbell and Hargrave.
    Fulkerson led off the inning with a single, and he was brought home three walks later as Michael Carson, Hawkins and Miller all forced consecutive walks.
    Campbell then walked to score Michael Carson, and Hawkins added to the large Lion lead after being hit by a pitch.
    Miller scored on an RBI single by Tolle. Kyle Carson knocked in Campbell with a base hit, and the final run of the game came with Hargrave scoring on a single by Sammy Williams.
    Miller was the winning pitcher as he pitched the complete game. He allowed two runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks in a 78-pitch effort. He struck out nine batters.
    Campbell finished with five RBIs, with Kyle Carson gaining three RBIs. Miller and Tolle also had three RBIs.
    The win improves FHS to 3-1 overall, 3-0 in the SHL.
