LEESBURG – The Fairfield Lions took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they gained their fourth Southern Hills League win Friday night, defeating the Fayetteville Rockets 60-45.

After trailing 8-4 early in the opening quarter, the Lions charged to a 15-10 first quarter lead. A 20-point second quarter gave the Lions a 35-16 advantage after two quarters.

“We came out hot in the second quarter,” Fairfield head coach Matt Carson said. "After we called a time out in the first, we settled down and played well after that."

FHS (6-5, 4-2) won the third frame 12-10, but lost in the final eight minutes 19-13.

Fairfield junior Chris Cox led all scorers with 26 points, finishing 13 of 14 from the free-throw line. Cox made five two-point buckets and one 3-pointer. The junior post player also had 14 rebounds and three blocks for a double-double.

Cody Tolle finished with 11 points, followed with nine points from Ian Adams. Cameron Rolark gained seven points in the Lions’ win. Rolark and Adams each sank a 3-pointer. Adams led FHS with five assists.

“Ian and Cameron created havoc in the game,” Carson said. “Cody (Ferrell) and (Cody) Tolle gave us a good boost (Friday).

Alex Henson scored three points, followed with two points each by Brandon Carmean and Cody Ferrell.

Tyler Guenther led the Rockets with 11 points.

FHS out rebounded the Rockets 35-23. FHS committed 30 turnovers.

“This was a team effort,” Carson said. “The guys get Chris (Cox) the ball inside and he can score, but he can kick the ball out if he is doubled up, and others can step up and score. They all help each other out and it is a joy to coach this team.”

FHS will play again on Friday, Jan. 22 as they travel to take on rival Lynchburg-Clay.

The win improves the Lions to 6-5 overall, 4-2 in the SHL. Fayetteville drops to 2-8.
