The Fairfield High School boys cross-country team competed in the George Rogers Clark Invitational held in Springfield, finishing as the runners-up in second place, Saturday.

The event, hosted by Springfield Central Catholic High School, is an invitational uniquely started with a live shot by an American Revolution-era cannon.

The second-place finish by the boys team left them only 15 points behind the eventual winner, National Trail High School.

FHS earned the second-place spot despite the team missing top runner, Michael Mangus, and fifth man, Wyatt Crothers, who were absent due to taking the ACT.

The Lions were led by two-time state qualifier Blake Hildebrant, who finished in fourth place at 17:30.

Freshman Wyatt Evans placed eighth at 18:02, and fellow freshman Trent Swisher was 18th with a time of 18:49.
