LC wraps up year with make-up win over Fairfield

LEESBURG — Though both teams had been eliminated from postseason play, Lynchburg-Clay won their final game of the regular season, Thursday, as they defeated Highland County counterpart Fairfield, 59-44.
The win at Fairfield's Grandle Gymnasium was a makeup game for the two Southern Hills Athletic Conference teams, though the game didn't count toward the final league standings.
LC ends the season at 18-6 overall, as they were eliminated from the postseason by Peebles. FHS ends the year at 5-19 overall.
In the make-up game, LC played without leading scorer in senior Laney Lewis, who was injured in the sectional final against Peebles. Before the game, the Lady Lions and head coach Matt Hodson recognized Lewis and her accomplishments.
"Coach Hodson and his players are a great group of people," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "They really are a class act. Coach Hodson recognized Laney and her injury and said some very nice words. Their team got her a get well card signed by everyone. That was a very special moment for us and for Laney. I just want to say thanks to Coach Hodson and his team."
As for the game, LC opened up the first frame with a 17-5 lead, followed by a halftime advantage of 27-19 as FHS outscored the visiting Lady Mustangs, 14-10 in the second.

In the third quarter, LC added to their lead with a 14-11 frame, and the season was complete following the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter, as LC won the frame, 18-14.
"We played well together in our last game," Lewis said. "Our seniors played in their final game of their careers. We were able to do what only a few teams are able to accomplish, win our last game. I think that meant a lot to our four seniors."
Leading the Lady Mustangs in scoring was senior Emma Setty as she tallied 17 points in her final game. Setty led off with seven points in the first quarter, followed by a two-point second. In the second half, the senior scored four points in each of the third and fourth frames.
Setty added six rebounds, two assists and five steals, and she made one 3-pointer in the first quarter.
FHS was led in scoring by junior Heather Cox with a game-high 20 points.
For the Lady Mustangs, Morgan Fittro added nine points and four steals, and senior Ginny Gadzinski totaled five points, one rebound and one assist.
Madysyn Creighton added 11 points for LC, with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Ali Little totaled seven points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
Also for LC, Sarah Rosselott finished with four points, five rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals. Shelby Stewart chipped in with seven points, two assists and two steals. Madison Wills totaled four points, two rebounds and one steal.
