Lady Lions advance to sectional finals with win over Westfall

The Fairfield Lady Lions earned a Division III sectional semifinal win on Thursday, Feb. 10 by a 49-18 score over the visiting No. 29 seeded Westfall Lady Mustangs.
No. 4 seeded Fairfield with the win improves to 18-3 overall, as the state-ranked Fairfield squad moves to the sectional finals on Monday, Feb. 14 at home against No. 13 seed Oak Hill at 7 p.m.
“We started out a little slow offensively,” FHS head coach Jeremy McGraw said. “It’s a great feeling to get the first one in the tournament. I thought Peyton Magee gave us a big spark early with her effort. She had nine rebounds in the first half, and she has a motor that just doesn’t stop.”
In the Thursday night win, the Lady Lions held the Westfall club to single-digit scoring in each quarter of play, while FHS led 12-5 at the end of the first frame. Following a 14-3 second frame, the Lady Lions led by a 26-8 score at halftime.
The first quarter saw Fairfield’s 12 points come off five points by Madison Bronner, plus four points from Faith Donley, two points by Peyton Magee and one point from a free throw by Emma Fouch.
In the second quarter Fouch scored six points, while Magee collected eight points, including making two 3-pointers.
FHS put the game out of reach after the third frame was complete, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 23-6. In this quarter, Fouch scored eight points (including two 3-pointers), while Ella Newkirk scored four points off two baskets. Magee also scored four points in the frame, while Bronner added five points and Caitlyn Quickle made a 3-pointer.
The final quarter of play saw Fairfield net no points, while Westfall added four points to their final total.
Fairfield was led in scoring by Fouch with 15 points, followed by Magee with 14 points and Bronner with nine points. Also for the Lady Lions, final scoring included Newkirk (four), Quickle (three) and Donley (four).
FHS finished 6-of-10 from the free-throw line.
