Lady Lions advance to sectional championship

LEESBURG - The Fairfield Lady Lions defeated the Glenwood New Boston Lady Tigers easily by a score of 10-0 in a SE District Sectional semifinal game Thursday at Fairfield High School.
The Lady Lions had all aspects of its game working for them including: pitching, errorless defense, aggressive base running and a high- powered offense.
Lauren Larrick was brilliant on the mound acording to assistant coach Tom Purtell. Larrick tossed a two-hit shutout, her sixth of the season.
Fairfield (14-8, 10-3 SHL) took an early one-run lead scoring in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and bases empty, Tiffany Woods singled to the left side of the infield. Jade Shelton followed with a double down the left field line scoring Woods.
The Lady Lions took a commanding lead with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Heather Huff led off the inning with a walk and stole second base, her 27th steal of the season. Danielle Butler laid down a bunt-single, scoring Huff from second base. Abby Thackston followed with a single to left-centerfield to drive in Butler. Whitney Hanenkrat walked and Larrick had an infield single to load the bases.
Woods was hit by a pitch to advancing Hanenkrat across the plate. Shelton hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Courtney Huff, who running for Larrick. Kylie Bates singled to right-centerfield to add another run. Heather Huff was safe on an error at first as Bates scored.
FHS completed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Larrick drove in a run on a ground out to third and Woods singled in the inning. Hanenkrat scored on a wild pitch.
Larrick and the Lady Lion defense made quick work of the Lady Tiger hitters, scattering two hits and playing errorless softball. Larrick struck out nine batters in five innings.
"Lauren was very efficient on the mound throwing just 79 pitches in the game, 59 for strikes," Purtell said.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions: Woods (2-for-2, two runs, one RBI), Shelton (1-for-2, double, two RBIs), Larrick (1-for-3, one run, one RBI), Butler (1-for-2, one run, one RBI), Abby Thackston (1-for-3, one run, one RBI) and Bates (1-for-2, one run, one RBI).
Larrick (13-8) was the winning pitcher for the Lady Lions and Megan Nyland suffered the loss for the Lady Tigers.
The FHS shmophore final pitching line read five innings, two hits, no runs, no earned runs, three walks and nine strikeouts.
With the victory, the Fairfield Lady Lions advance to the sectional championship game against the No. 3 Seeded Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans (13-9, 10-3 SOC) at Notre Dame High School, in Portsmouth on Saturday, May 15th at 1 p.m.
