High winds push Westfall by Lions

WESTFALL - Hitting with high winds was the name of the game Saturday afternoon at Westfall High School. Both Fairfield and Westfall scored in double digits, but the Mustangs outlasted the Lions 11-10 as the game was called in five innings due to high winds and dust.
The Lions scored first in the top of the opening inning with two runs. Ian Adams started with a lead-off two-base hit, followed with a base hit from Bobby Wilson. Nathaniel Miller brought both runners home with a two-run single with no outs. Also reaching first in the inning was Dakota Hargrave via error.
Matt Near and Nathan Hock came back and tied the game in the bottom of the first for Westfall. Near tripled in the inning and scored on a throwing error to third.
In the bottom of the second, Westfall took the lead with an inside-the-park home run by Near to make the score 3-2.
The Lions rallied back in the top of the third with two runs in the inning.
Wilson started by being hit by a pitch, then stole second and third bases. Campbell scored Wilson in the ensuing at-bat with a single. Cody Tolle was called safe on an error by the Mustangs, with Chase Fulkerson coming in as a pinch runner. Fulkerson eventually took home plate with the help of a two-out single from Austin Hildebrant.
The Lions gained a 7-3 lead in the following inning, with Adams reaching with a double. Adams took third on a error. Miller followed by being safe on a fielder's choice. Campbell plated both runners with a single.
The game started unraveling for the Lions in the bottom of the fourth, with Westfall scoring eight runs on four hits and two errors.
Trailing at the start of the fifth, the Lions answered with three runs in the inning, cutting the Westfall lead to one run.
Tolle reached the bases safely on an error. With Nathan Hawkins running for Tolle, Kyle Carson doubled moving Hawkins to third. Michael Carson then had a SAC bunt. Hildebrant scored both Hawkins and Kyle Carson with a base knock. Hildebrant stole third and took home on the errant throw to third base.
The game was called in the bottom of the fifth.
Campbell was charged with the loss. He pitched one inning, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and two walks.
Kyle Carson pitched three innings for the Lions. He allowed six runs (five earned) on five walks and four hits. He had two strikeouts.
Zach Wolfe earned the win for Westfall. He pitched four innings, allowing 10 runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk. Wolfe finished with five strikeouts.
Slade Ranke pitched one inning of relief. He had one walk and one strikeout.
For the Lions Hildebrant was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run. Adams finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Wilson was 1-for-2 with two runs. Miller went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.
Campbell went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run. Kyle Carson finished 1-for-2 with a double.
The loss drops FHS to 2-1 overall. The Lions are 2-0 in Southern Hills League play and will face the Ripley Blue Jays Tuesday at 5 p.m. in SHL action.
