FHS Lady Lions gain dominant SHAC win over visiting Lady Rockets

LEESBURG — Monday night saw a performance by the Fairfield Lady Lions that not only allowed them to earn a Southern Hills Athletic Conference win, but a victory where they defended their home field with a dominant effort by defeating the visiting Fayetteville Lady Rockets, 4-0.
Fairfield’s shutout win came from a defensive performance that saw the Lady Rockets have just two shots in the entire match, while Fairfield had 14 shots.
“We had a defensive lockdown in the second half, and in the first half we wanted to get really get going and get after it because we’ve had some slow starts this season,” FHS head coach Jacob Alexander said. “We wanted to do that so that way we wouldn’t have to be pushing in the second half to score goals.
“We did that tonight, and it gives you a little more comfort when you can do that in the first half and not have to press in the second half.”
The Lady Lions scored the first of their four goals with 32:19 on the clock when Cadence Saunders scored the first of her two goals of the match for the 1-0 lead.
Saunders wasn’t finished as she made it a two-goal advantage with a goal with 20:17 left on the clock, in a one-on-one situation, for the 2-0 advantage. The two goals by Saunders were assisted by Ella Newkirk and Kennedy Zink.
“Ella Newkirk, Cadence Saunders and Kennedy Zink really did a nice job working together,” Alexander said. “We really had some good chemistry at top.”
The score went to 3-0 still in the first around the 10-minute mark, as this time it was Newkirk scoring the goal, with Saunders having the assist.
In the second half, the Lady Lions added one final goal as Newkirk sent the ball into the back of the net for a second time — with another assist by Saunders — to put the Fairfield squad ahead by four goals with 12 minutes left in the SHAC contest.
At goal with the shutout was Alayna McIntosh with three saves.
“Our back line has been the real difference this year,” Alexander said. “It starts with Alayna McIntosh at goal, and in the middle we have Kara Gleadle and Emmi Vance both doing a great job. Emmi has a huge kick on her, and it helps split the field real quick.
“Avery Teeters really does a nice job locking down the left side, and we’ve had a rotation on the right side, but Morgan Richmond and Lydia Williams did a nice job in the first half, and Makenna Colwell played some there in the second half.”
The seniors were honored before the match, and they are Kiley Lamb and Morgan Richmond.
“Kiley has been on the team the past couple years, and she’s a fun girl to coach,” Alexander said. “Morgan joined us this year and has been a good addition to the team. She’s provided leadership for the younger girls, and she’s a calming presence.”
Fairfield is scheduled to play again on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Zane Trace in a non-conference match.
