Fairfield Lions win sectional championship

The No. 11 seeded Fairfield Lions earned a big-time win in their Division IV SE District Sectional Final game on Saturday, Feb. 27, as the Lions earned the championship by defeating the host and No. 6 seeded Ironton St. Joseph Flyers by a 56-43 score.
The Lions and the Flyers were tied at 9-9 when the first frame came to a close, with Fairfield having five points (including a 3-pointer) from Koben Zink, followed by two points each from Reese Teeters and Jon Bentley.
The second quarter was even more productive, as the Lions totaled 13 points in the second frame for a 22-16 lead, outscoring the hosts, 13-7 in the frame.
FHS had seven points from Teeters, one point by Zink, two points off a basket by Tucker Watson and a 3-pointer by Connor Priest in the second frame.
The Lions added 14 points to their overall total in the third frame for a 36-24 lead. That third frame consisted of five points by Brayden Zimmerman (including a 3-pointer), two points from Zink, two points by Bentley and five points by Teeters, as he made a 3-pointer in the third frame.
The final frame saw the Lions score 20 points.
Final scoring for the Lions included Teeters leading with 23 points, while teammates Priest and Zink each scored eight points. Also for the Lions, Zimmerman totaled seven points, and with four points each were Bentley and Watson. Rounding out the scoring was T.J. Mootz with two points off two made free throws.
As a team, the Lions totaled 14 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers and they were 16-of-25 from the free-throw line.
For Ironton St. Joseph, they were led on the scoreboard by J.C. Damron with 20 points. The Flyers finished with five two-point baskets, eight 3-pointers and they were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line. They finish at 10-6 overall.
Next for the Lions is a district semifinal game on Wednesday, March 3 against No. 3 seeded Federal Hocking at 7 p.m. at Federal Hocking High School.
