Fairfield Lions fend off visiting Green Devils

LEESBURG – Being on their home court at Grandle Gymnasium for the first time this season, the Fairfield Lions fended off the visiting North Adams Green Devils by a 43-24 score Friday night (Dec. 10).
Fairfield began the game with a three-point play from Koben Zink for the early three-point advantage. The Lions never lost the lead for the remainder of the quarter or the game, as they led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-14 at halftime after outscoring the Green Devils 13-7 in the second quarter.
The first quarter continued with a jumper by Reese Teeters, and later, after two free throws from North Adams, the Lions answered with a drive to the hoop and basket by Brayden Zimmerman and a layup from Jon Bentley, who gained possession of the ball off a rebound and assist by Tytis Cannon for a 9-4 Fairfield lead with 3:09 left on the first-quarter clock.
The rest of the quarter saw the Green Devils score three points for the 9-7 score after one frame. After the score was tied at 9-9 off two free throws by North Adams, the Lions came back with an 8-0 run with a jumper by Teeters, a layup off a drive to the basket by Zimmerman and four straight points by Teeters for a 17-9 FHS advantage with 5:19 left in the quarter.
After a 3-pointer by North Adams’ Kamden Buttelwerth, the Lions roared back with a free throw made by Bentley. NAHS answered with two free throws of their own, only to see Bentley score two more off points in the paint. The Lions ended the scoring in the second quarter with two shots made from the free-throw line by Zimmerman for the halftime score of 22-14.
The Lions built a 35-19 lead after three frames in a third quarter that included two two-point baskets by Bentley, two 3-pointers from Zink and a 3-pointer by T.J. Mootz as FHS outscored the Green Devils, 13-5 in the quarter.
The fourth frame saw the Lions score eight points with 3-pointers by Zimmerman and Mootz to start the frame and two made free throws by Teeters. NAHS had five points in the quarter.
Bransyn Copas led the Green Devils in scoring for the game with six points. The Green Devils were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line for the game with three two-point baskets and three 3-pointers as well.
Fairfield was led in scoring by Teeters with 10 points, while Bentley, Zimmerman and Zink each scored nine points. Mootz finished the game with six points.
FHS finished with 10 two-point baskets and five 3-pointers, and they were 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. For the game, the 3-pointers for FHS saw Mootz and Zink with two each and one by Zimmerman.
