Fairfield Lady Lions volleyball defeats McClain

The Fairfield Lady Lions varsity volleyball team defeated McClain with a three-game sweep Monday night in Greenfield.
Fairfield took set one, 25-22, in a contest they led from start to finish but was very close and contested throughout.
Set two was another close and hard-fought affair in which there were 10 ties before the Lady Lions prevailed at the end by a 25-21 count.
In the third and final set of the night, McClain led early, but Fairfield battled back at the middle of the match and pulled away at the end, winning 25-17.
“This was probably the best match for us of the season so far,” said Fairfield coach Lesley Hatten. “They played extremely well as a team, and we kept in clean and stayed competitive the whole match.
“My two middle blockers, Braylynn Haines and Haley Shoemaker, were really strong at the net, and our two outside hitters, Peyton Magee and Emma Fouch, also had good games. Faith Miller kind of runs the show and always keeps her composure and always knows who to go to when we need a good kill.”
McClain head coach Taylor Alsop also talked about her team’s performance after the match.
“We had a slow start tonight, but overall we played pretty well despite the loss,” Alsop said. “I thought our girls as a whole played really well. Abby Atkinson, Lily Barnes, Gracey Eakins and Iva Easter all blocked and played strong at the net.
“All of my hitters really did what they were supposed to do, and I thought Evelynn VanZant, Gracey and Madi Sykes all served well for us.”
Fairfield’s next game was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 28 at home against Lynchburg-Clay, and McClain entertains Washington on Tuesday, September 28 and Jackson on Thursday, Sept. 30.
