Fairfield Lady Lions earn sectional title

LEESBURG – The Fairfield Lady Lions have earned the right to be called sectional champions, as they defeated the Piketon Redstreaks by a 7-1 score on Wednesday night at FHS.
The win was a dominating effort by the Lady Lions, with the team scoring four goals in the first half, then they continued that effort in the second half with three more goals for the seven-goal total.
Faiefield had a hat-trick from Kennedy Zink, including scoring the first goal of the match with 33:09 left in the first half.
From there, the next two goals were scored by Cadence Saunders, with her first goal of the Division III SE District Sectional Final match coming with 31:08 on the clock. That was followed with the second goal at the 18:31 mark, putting the Lady Lions ahead by a 3-0 score.
FHS built a four-goal advantage off a goal by Faith Donley at the 8:40 mark of the first half, putting the Lady Lions in the lead by a 4-0 score, as that was the score at halftime.
In the second half. Fairfield had two goals by Zink to complete the hat-trick, plus a goal by Ella Newkirk. Assists in the match were credited to Newkirk, Saunders and Donley, who had two assists.
Next for Fairfield is a district semifinal match as the Lady Lions will host Highland County counterpart and Southern Hills Athletic Conference rival, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, on Monday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. at FHS.
Earlier this season, the Lady Lions hosted LCHS to a scoreless tie in a SHAC regular-season contest. Both teams tied for second place in the SHAC this season.
“It was a fun game to get our tournament run started,” FHS head coach Jacob Alexander said. “This is now the second sectional title in a row for our girls program. The girls have really done a great job of elevating this program.
“We look forward to hosting Lynchburg-Clay on Monday and getting a rematch from our league match that ended in a scoreless draw.”
