3 named girls basketball AP All-Ohio

Three Highland County girls basketball players were named to the 2012-13 Associated Press All-Ohio by a panel of media members from the state.
In Division II, McClain sophomore Shania Massie was named honorable mention. In Division III, Lynchburg-Clay senior Laney Lewis was named special mention, and for Division IV, Fairfield junior Heather Cox was also named special mention.
The three players led their teams in scoring this season, as all three made their mark on the high school campaign. Massie broke the MHS girls basketball single-game scoring mark with 40 points against London. Lewis surpassed the 1,000-point career-scoring mark, and Cox had a breakout season where she scored 20 or more points in the final seven games of the season for the Lady Lions.
As for Massie, she has also been selected second-team AP SE All-District, first-team District 14 All-District and All-South Central Ohio League this season.
The sophomore point guard finished the season with 380 points with 16.5 points per game. Massie also averaged 3.1 assists per game, 3.2 steals per game and had a 40-point game and a 30-point game this past season.
"She's very talented and worked very hard to get where she is," McClain head coach Dennis Overstake said. "Most of teams tried to stop her to limit us as a team. As the year went on, she and the team handled the pressure of other teams to win the last six games of the regular season.
"Shania is able to score from the outside, and as a guard, she's strong enough to take the ball inside, where she does most of her scoring. She's an all-around player and athlete. She's going to play AAU this summer, and she's putting forth the effort to improve more for next season."
For Lewis in Division III this season, the senior scored 441 points this season and over 1,000 points for her career as a four-year varsity starter.

Lewis played in 23 games this season, where she averaged 19.2 ppg, as she scored in double figures in 21 of 23 games played this season, including double-digit scoring in the first 20 games of the season.
The senior has 20 or more points in a game 12 times and 30 or more points twice with games of 31 and 30 points this season. She also collected 16 double-doubles and two triple-doubles. She averaged 5.2 spg, 2.9 apg and 2.0 blocks per game.
This season, Lewis was also named All-Southern Hills Athletic Conference, first-team AP SE All-District and first-team District 14 Coaches All-District in Division III.
"Laney has worked hard, not just this season, but from the end of last year," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "She played all summer long and really worked hard to improve her game. She stepped up for us as a leader and was our 'go-to player' in every aspect. Her stats speak for themselves, but she was more than that for our team and deserves and has earned the accolades that she has been honored with her senior year.
"It was a very unique opportunity to coach Laney. She is really one of the most talented players we have had go through our program. I am glad I was able to be a part of that and even more proud of the way she has played her senior year. She showed a tremendous amount of character during our sectional final game against Peebles. Even with a torn ACL, she was fighting to get back in the game to battle with her teammates. Her competitiveness will drive her to prevail to become an even better player as she moves on in her basketball career. It is an honor to be considered as All-Ohio, and Laney deserves every bit of it."

Cox scored 20 or more points in the final seven games of the season. Cox also earned first-team AP SE All-District, District 14 Coaches All-District first-team and All-SHAC.
"Heather has worked very hard to improve her game in the offseason by playing AAU at a high level and individual workouts," Fairfield head coach Matt Hodson said. "I am extremely happy for Heather as she continues to become a complete player for the Lady Lions."
