Garrett Irvin graduated from Southern State in 2019 with an associate of arts degree. In the fall of 2024, he decided to return to Southern State to pursue a degree in nursing – a lifelong passion where he could develop the skills needed to help others and make a meaningful difference.
Irvin initially chose Southern State for the convenience and affordability. When he decided to reenroll a few years later, it was because of the college’s excellent reputation in nursing education. Having previously attended Southern State, the decision to return was an easy one. “My past experience here was incredibly positive,” Irvin shared. “I was confident Southern State would be the best choice for pursuing this new academic and professional path.”
A defining aspect of Irvin’s educational experience has been Southern State’s strong sense of community. According to Irvin, the environment is one where individuals are consistently supported and encouraged to succeed. “At no point, during my time at Southern State, have I felt unheard or set up for failure,” he recalled. “Everyone is committed to helping one another, and that kind of support is hard to find elsewhere.”
Irvin also praised the campus culture, describing professors, staff, and peers as exceptionally kind, professional, and welcoming. Southern State’s collaborative atmosphere has played a key role in fostering both academic and personal growth for Irvin.
When asked if he would recommend Southern State to others, his response was very clear. “Of course I would recommend Southern State! This college offers great opportunities for people from all backgrounds. Getting a college degree requires hard work and dedication, and the support you receive at Southern State makes all the difference,” said Irvin.
Looking ahead, Irvin plans to graduate in May and take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become a licensed Registered Nurse. His career goal is to work in an Intensive Care Unit, an area he finds especially compelling.
“I feel confident in my abilities, thanks to the strong knowledge, clinical rotations, and preceptorship opportunities provided by Southern State,” Irvin said. “I am truly grateful for the experience and support I’ve received.”
Southern State Community College continues to prepare students for meaningful careers through hands-on learning, dedicated instruction, and a commitment to student success.
