The McClain High School Drama Department will present the 1999 Peter Stone revival of “Annie Get Your Gun” Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, at 7:30 p.m.
The musical is based on the true story of Ohio native Annie Oakley, a simple backwoods girl with a talent for shooting. Annie falls for vaudeville shooting ace Frank Butler, the star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The original Broadway show debuted in 1946, with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. The music has remained so popular that many people know the songs, but not the play.
Classics like “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better,” “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business” are all featured in this musical.
Seniors Erin Mizer and Cody Hendershot star in the lead roles of Annie Oakley and Frank Butler, respectively. These two opposites eventually do attract, and Annie’s extraordinary shoo ting ability and strong-willed nature keep the romance light and full of humor.
Nik Beatty is featured as Col. Buffalo Bill, with Courtney Paul as Frank Butler’s assistant, Dolly Tate, and Terry Staten as Charlie Davenport, manager of the Wild West Show.
Other main characters are: Winnie Tate (Keigan Detty), Tommy Keeler (Sam Henry), Chief Sitting Bull (Zack Mullikin), Pawnee Bill (Andrew VanMatre), Foster Wilson (Guennar Reyer), Nellie Oakley (Elizabeth Prayner), Jessie Oakley (Kendall Pollard), and Jake Oakley (Eric Anderson).
The production features a lot of high energy, toe-tapping singing and dancing from a talented ensemble of cowboys, cowgirls, Indians, and socialites. The show is directed by Loretta Flora, with Russ Hawvermale as the orchestra conductor, Brad Barber as technical director, Nyleah Trimmer as choreographer, and set design by Jim Finnegan.
Tickets will go on sale Monday, March 29 at McClain High School. Admission is $5 and tickets may be reserved or purchased at the door.
