MOWRYSTOWN - In the semifinals of the Whiteoak Classic, it was the host team who gained a win, as the Wildcats pulled out a 9-8 victory over visiting Rock Hill Saturday at Whiteoak High School.
The Wildcats gave up the lead after allowing three runs the top of the seventh, giving themselves three outs to defend their home field.
Luke Taggert led off the bottom of the seventh with a two-strike line drive. Taggert then stole second base, and Corey Hughes bunted the ball. In the bunt play, the Rock Hill catcher overthrew first base, allowing Taggert to score the game-winning run.
WHS scored four runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. Rock Hill scored their runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Rock Hills led 4-0 after three innings.
"Jesse Bradds was clutch at the plate in our big four-run fourth and fifth innings," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said.
At the plate for WHS, Bradds was 2-for-3 with one run. Taggert was 2-for-4 with one run. Ethan Eyre, Ben Barnett, Zack Docter and Gage Carraher each had one hit. Docter's hit was a triple, as he also tallied two runs in the non-league win.
Carraher and Barnett each had one RBI.
Barnett (2-0) was credited with the win. He pitched one inning, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks.
Eyre pitched six innings allowing five runs (none earned) on five hits and one walk. Eyre had one strikeout.
"Ethan had another impressive outing on the mound for us," Veidt said. "As many times as he has thrown in relief for us the past two years, this was his first varsity start."
Bradds and Eyre were named to the all-tournament team.
