WILMINGTON - Giving up six unearned runs against the East Clinton Astros hurt any chances for a Whiteoak Wildcats win Monday at Wilmington College. The Wildcats gave up the six runs in three combined innings for a 6-1 non-league loss.
The Astros scored one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth for the win.
The lone Wildcat score came in the bottom of the fifth with Ethan Eyre forcing a bases loaded walk for the RBI, scoring teammate Ben Barnett.
At the plate WHS was led by three players with two hits each.
Barnett was 2-for-4 with the lone WHS run. Gage Carraher ended the day 2-for-3, and Jesse Bradds was also 2-for-3.
Eyre suffered the loss. Eyre pitched seven strong innings as he gave up zero earned runs. He allowed six hits and one walk, while striking out six batters.
"(Ethan) Eyre pitched another fantastic game. He is fun to watch. He works fast, throws strike one and keeps the hitter on the defensive," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "One day we will play as well behind him defensively as he pitches. Our young kids could learn a lot about tempo and attacking hittters by watching him. East Clinton made the plays defensively when they had to and we didn't, bottom line."
The loss drops WHS to 6-9 overall. The Wildcats are 4-3 in the Southern Hills League.
WHS will play again today as they travel to face Highland County rival Fairfield at 5 p.m.
