North Adams outguns Whiteoak, 69-54, to open 2010-11 season
SEAMAN – Drew Dollich showed little signs of his preseason illness and lit up the Whiteoak defense for 21 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, as Coach Dave Young's Green Devils defeated Tom Wessner's Wildcats, 69-54, Friday, Dec. 3.
Prior to the opening tipoff, the North Adams gymnasium paused for a moment of silence in honor of fallen U.S. Marine Luke Scott of Adams County, who lost his life in the war in Afghanistan this week.
Whiteoak's Doc Seip gave the Wildcats an early 2-0 edge, but consecutive baskets by Dollich and Seth Sparks gave the Devils a 4-2 lead. The Devils never trailed again, though the 'Cats did tie the game at 24-all in the second period.
Seip, meanwhile, collected two fouls in the game's first two minutes and spent the remainder of the half on the bench.
The Devils built a 15-7 advantage when Sparks laced a 3-pointer from the corner with 1:10 left in the opening period. Whiteoak countered with a fast and furious end to the quarter, however, scoring six unanswered points in less than a minute.
Mikey Carraher started the 6-0 run with a bucket. The Wildcats swiped the ball on the next North Adams possession and Joe Michael put it in the hoop. This was followed by another Green Devils' turnover and a layup by Wes Stratton, and it was quickly a 15-13 game.
J ust as the momentum seemed ready to switch to the Wildcats, Dollich launched a long trey and banked it in at the buzzer, proving that banks are open late in Adams County. The first period closed with North Adams owning an 18-13 lead.
The two Southern Hills League rivals played an intense second quarter capped off by a Mikey Carraher technical foul with 1:32 left before the half.
While the Devils misfired on several good looks from outside the arc, Whiteoak was chipping away at the deficit. Baskets by Logan Morris, Gage Carraher and Michael made it a 22-20 game at the 5:05 mark.
Dollich connected on a pair of free throws to make it 24-20. Then, it was Gage Carraher and Michael hitting back-to-back shots and the non-league game was knotted at 24-24 with 4:04 left in the half.
From that point, North Adams would go on to outscore Whiteoak, 45-30.
Sheridan Carroll broke the tie on North Adams' next possession, and the Devils were on their way to a season-opening victory.
"We played with a lot of intensity," Young said, after his 398th career coaching victory. Young will soon surpass Ohio Hall of Fame coach Charlie Huggins (father of West Virginia and former University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins), who had 398 career wins.
After being tied at 24, the Devils went on an 11-0 run. Baskets by Drew Mitchell and Carroll extended their lead to 32-24, before Carraher's technical.
North Adams then connected on three of four free throws, one by Treavor Hall and two more by Dollich.
Whiteoak finally snapped the 11-0 spurt on a free throw by Gage Carraher. Carraher scored again with one second remaining and the half ended with North Adams in command, 37-27.
A strong third quarter, in which the Devils outscored the Wildcats, 23-12, iced the victory. Dollich, Carroll and Kris King all connected from beyond the 3-point arc and Caleb Harper grabbed an offensive rebound in traffic and muscled in it for two more Devils' points.
After their surge near the end of the opening period, Whiteoak never really got untracked. After Carroll's three with 4:02 to play in the third, Wessner called a timeout to regroup. Seip answered with a two, plus one, for a conventional three-point play. That pulled Whiteoak to 50-37. They would get no closer.
Dollich paced North Adams (1-0) with 21 points. Carroll scored 15, followed by King with 11. Quintin Baker played a good low-post game and finished with six points. Other scorers included: Sparks (5), Mitchell (4), Harper (4), Skylar Mefford (2) and Hall (1).
Gage Carraher led Whiteoak (0-1) with 20 points followed by: Seip (9), Jon Fox (7), Morris (6), Michael (6), Mikey Carraher (4) and Stratton (2).
