HILLSBORO — For the third straight year, the McClain Lady Tigers are the champions of the Highland County Spike & Dig Showcase volleyball tournament.
MHS won the 7th Annual tournament with match wins over the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats and the Hillsboro Lady Indians in the finals at Hillsboro High School.
"This was a team win," MHS coach Emma Gall said. "I don't think anyone stood out individually, but we played well as a team and that's what it takes.
"The girls worked well on serve and receive this week in practice, and on coverage. We want to be known as 'The team that talks,' and we did that (Saturday)."
In their opening match McClain won over Whiteoak in two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-15.
In the other opening contest, Hillsboro defeated the Fairfield Lady Lions 25-21 and 27-25.
In the consolation (third place) game Whiteoak defeated the Lady Lions in three sets. WHS won the first set 25-22, followed with FHS winning 26-24. In the third set WHS won 25-22.
McClain dominated the first game of the championship match, defeating HHS 25-8. They took home the title for the third straight year with a match clinching score of 25-19.
In the final set MHS stared off with a convincing six-point lead, but HHS came back to cut the MHS lead to 8-7. Again, the Lady Indians came back to cut into a McClain lead at 13-11. The closest HHS would come again was at 23-19 in favor of the Lady Tigers.
Members of the Lady Tigers are:Alyssa Bean, Sasha Lawwell, Lori Shonkwiler, Logan Greene, Makenzie Olaker, Brittany Stith, Brittany Mullikin, Mackenzie Garrison and Jenna Perie.
