Lady Mustangs still in hunt for conference title

It was another winning evening for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs as they won the season series with their Highland County counterpart Whiteoak, 54-21 Thursday.

The win at WHS keeps the Lady Mustangs (16-4 overall) in the hunt for the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Division II championship as they are tied with North Adams with 9-3 conference marks, as each team has one conference game remaining.

LC's final conference game is next Thursday (Feb. 7) at Peebles. North Adams' only league game remaining is at West Union.

If LC can defeat PHS next Thursday, it will be their first conference title since the 2009-10 season, which was the final year of coaching for Linda Hatten.

On the final day of January, the Lady Mustangs led the first quarter over their Highland County counterpart, 22-8. WHS responded by leading the second frame, 7-5.

At the start of the second half, with a lead of 27-15, the Lady Mustangs took back control of the game with a 16-6 quarter, then in the fourth shut out the Lady 'Cats (2-19, 1-11) at 11-0.

Laney Lewis led all scorers with a game-high 18 points and recorded her second triple-double of the season as she added 16 rebounds and 10 steals. The senior added five assists and one blocked shot.

Emma Setty totaled 13 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Also scoring for LC were Sarah Rosselott with eight points, Madysyn Creighton with seven, Ryleigh Jackson with four points, Morgan Fittro added three and Ali Little sank one free throw.

Ginny Gadzinski added one rebound and one steal, while Shelby Stewart totaled one rebound, and two steals. Madison Wells totaled three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

For the game, LC made 23 field goals (including 3-pointers) and were 7-of-13 from the free-throw line. They totaled 47 rebounds, nine assists and 25 steals, along with four blocked shots, as Rosselott led with two.
